An impressive fish but they dont half look ugly with the hooked nose and jaw.

Hmmm ... just realised (I think?) that this is part of the Laggan Estate. We've got an 'invite' to shoot occasionally on Estate properties via the gamekeeper - I wonder if this might be extended to having the occasional dabble? :D

Not sure but that same beat had a good week so far 30 lb salmon on monday ,50 lb tuesday , 25 lb wednesday

However at £ 410 per day Not cheap

Boleside beat is hooking about 30 fish per day just now ,With half that number landed

 

Sounds expensive until you realise that you can fish the same beat at different times for as little as £40 / day!

Some times the access to fish these sort of waters is reward enough and the potential size of the fish is secondary. For most of us we are happy to settle with paying less with less chance of catching well but enjoying the venue.

 

I do enjoy seeing these big amazing fish but it does leave me with the feeling that it's all to do with access.

I was lucky enough to meet and talk with a very famous and sucsessfull Salmon angler. He told me that he believed the "secret" of his sucsess was simple. He was wealthy enough to have acsess to some very good beats AND the bailiffs/river keepers on each of these would contact him when there were fish in the river(s). He was in a position to then stop work and fly up and fish! As he told me "It doesn't mater how skilled a salmon fisher you are you cant catch them if they are not there"!

Speaking of big salmon, I had the priviledge many years ago of seeing a salmon (in the UK!) that exceeded the rod-caught record by some margin! Unfortunately(?), I was yet to teach my teens, and blissfully unaware of the magnitude of what I was looking at - it had been caught in a net and brought in by one of the trawlers to Eyemouth, just over the border into Scotland.

At that time, there was a very prolific run of salmon and sea trout into the River Eye (though it's actually a very small, insignificant river when compared to many others) - it was usual to be able to see several dozen fish circling the harbour at certain stages of the tide, prior to the water levels being high enough for them to start moving upstream, so the appearance of salmon on the quayside was commonplace.

However ... this particular fish bottomed-out a set of (accurate) traders scales that went to a maximum of 5 stones ... and at the time I had no real interest in hanging about while bigger scales were found and brought to the quayside.

 

For those of you more familiar with kilograms; there were / are 14 pounds in a stone ... that fish was well in excess of SEVENTY pounts in weight!

I don't know if it is the "same salmon" but Canada is not going to recognize dead King Salmon. Rod and reel record is 97.??lbs but dead post spawn fish well over 120 lbs have been recorded.

No its a different salmon Phone.

 

A bit of a google comes up with the world record for rod caught Atlantic salmon as 79lb 2oz from the Tana river, Norway in 1928. But I've had bigger (in my dreams).
