Memory cards

My PC is fitted with a pair of 64mgb PC800 RDRAM RIMM cards.System supports ECC.

There are two spare slots.

Can I fit another pair of 64 mgb cards in the spare slots and would this give me 256mgb of memory?

PC will apparently support up to 1GB of memory.

best to look in the manual first it may be easier just to chuck the 64mb and get a bigger one ,i know windows of old had problems with different sized memory and 98 couldnt handle more than 512mb?

i have 2x512mb with one spare slot :(

64mb is less than puny video cards today so i.d jump to the highest the slot will take ,its not expensive

Cheers gonefishing, but they don't even sell RDRIMM cards! so no help there.

I can buy them from another site but I hoped to be able to buy a pair of 64 meg cards to add to the pair already in the PC, or even a pair of 128cards!

With older PC's always fit as 'pairs' ie 2x128 & 2x64 or 2x256. Most of the pre 'XP' machines give loads of probs if you dont.

As your manual says it can take up to 4x256 you should be ok with another pair of 64 or 128 or 256 or even a pair of 512 if you can find them in in RDRIMM.

Get a copy of 'everest' from the net and run it. it will give you all the gen on your motherboard and loads of other info as well.

Done that Tog, but many thaks anyway.

I really want more memory for video editing and am torn between saying "blow it" I will buy another PC, or adding to the memory I already have.

Seems we are in the same boat there Poledark!

I've an Athlon 950, P3 866, P3 550 and Celeron 500 note book all looking rather long in the tooth!

Question is can I be arsed to upgrade the better ones or just go get another box?

Tog...specially when I have upgraded my graphics card..and added a DVD writer!!

I think I have plenty of "power" though, it is a P4 1.7Gb.

A further question...if I add a pair of 128 cards, should I put them in where the two 64 meg cards are and put the 64 cards in the spare slots?

Is there an order in which the cards are accessed by the pc?

I cant ask the manufacturer as they are no longer in business in UK (Gateway)

what windows are you using Den ,i know pre XP versions actually run slower if you use mismatched memory (2 different sizes).

Gateway are just assemblers take a peek at the motherboard for clues to who made it ,you can then get all the specs from the manufacturer, look for anything written and jot them down ,an fcc number will be a start

I tend to put in the biggies first then the tiddlers!

That way if the little'uns do seem to slow the system you can whip'em out without having to move all four of them. (mind you it's very rare for more memory to slow a system down).

'everest' should give you your motherboard info and even a website for info and updates.
