Anybody clued up on hardware side of the Computer?

Your machine should do a few 'beeps' as it powers up. count the beeps (long and short), then look at motherboard info in manual or web to find which point it 'hangs', you may even have a numerical LED which tells you the post info if MB is newish.

Also does the 'post boot' screen come up at all?

Most likely: Power Supply, Memory, Graphics card, fan fail, CPU loose, MB fault.

If it gets past 'post - boot' screens and hangs when loading windows then it could be viri.

Hi Guys, just an update to let you know...

 

Backed up the computer and just formatted the thing. That seems to have cured the problem and also it appears to be a lot quicker too.

 

So seems that it was just a software fault.

 

Pheeeew, wasn't that confident myself with taking a screwdriver to the case :D

windows is always quicker after a format but after a few months it'l be a 486 again
