Hi Folks - 'fraid I'm pretty computer illiterate and my anti-virus has picked this trojan thing up. Normally when it finds things it removes them but it just keeps telling me it couldn't remove it. Can anyone help?

Win32.Mersting is a trojan that is used to change a user's default Internet Explorer homepage and/or default search page. It can also download other components and add pornography related Favorites to Internet Explorer.

Method of Infection.

The trojan can arrive on a system through a Java.Shinwow trojan by exploiting a security vulnerability in the Microsoft Virtual Machine; components of which may be detected as Java.ByteVerify.exploit. It can also exploit the Object Tag vulnerability in Internet Explorer (MS03-040) to install itself on a user's system. For more information, please visit:

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

Cheers Chris - however, not sure if I did something wrong but followed the link and downloaded the patch as per instructions. Then my CD rom drive locked up and my system crashed! Had to system restore - which leaves me back where I was! Any other ideas?

Try AVG7, or if thats the one your using try another. If this is an old problem surely an up to date AVG will shift it?

Once your shot of it get rid of Internet explorer and use firefox. I hope im right in saying that. I think IE uses JAVA which would be where the trojan got in??

Firefox will run Java applets too. Java's supposed to run in a "sandbox" and have restricted access to your PC's resources, but if this is not implemented perfectly by the software vendor there's a risk of this kind of thing happening.

I agree about ditching IE, mind.
