Network Problem

Recommended Posts

This afternoon i installed a Usb wireless device, which worked.

However, have discovered that my second PC, which is conected

by a cross over cable has lost conection, no Internet etc.

Have spent a couple of hours with Help and clicked a million tabs.

Is there an easy way to re-network/activate this second PC? I'm the host !

Both win XP home

Cheers

:)

I assume from your using a cross-over cable and mentioning 'host' PC that you are using ICS to let the 2nd PC connect to the internet.

ICS is like lots of the other free applets Microsoft provided in that it works but isn't real configurable and demands you meet certain conditions including a very specific 'internal' IP address on the host machine.

SandTiger pointed you in the proper direction but to make things a little easier for us to help you, do the following and post the contents of both the text files you will be creating to a reply here. That's the ENTIRE contents with nothing ommited or masked or altered or whatever.

On each PC,

- click on start, on run, key in cmd, click OK.

- from the cmd prompt, key in the following line and then press ENTER

ipconfig /all > c:\config.txt

Note that you have redirected the output from the screen to a text file so you won't see any results on screen. Just open each c:\config.txt file, copy the contents, and post here.

Tried that cmd, nothing happened ????

This 2nd pc has been connected for a year now, no problems

until i instaled this 'Nintendo usb WI-FI dongle.

The Usb WI-FI not connecting now either

Think i'll get someone in to sort :(

n4lly - after you ran the command, did you check in c:\ for a text file named config.txt? The command should have created one and it will contain the needed information.

At a guess, adding the wireless USB thingy altered some IP information and that stopped your other PC from connecting properly.
