You're thinking of Kipling's "Tommy Atkins":

http://faxmentis.org/html/kipling.html

Kipling came in for a lot of undeserved stick for being a warmonger (he wasn't). When his son John was killed in the First World War, he received some particularly nasty letters from some members of the public who thought he'd "Got what he deserved for glorifying war".

Soldiers have always been heroes when they're needed and villains when they're not, so things haven't changed a lot...

You may very well be right Davy, like I said it was from my (failing) memory, I seem to remember it as a 'punch' cartoon.

People forget that 'Military Hospitals' also look after the civilian populace.

HMS Haslar, a Military Hospital which also had an A&E unit for the Gosport area, not to mention a maternity unit, closed a couple of years ago, HMS Haslar, as I recall 'looked after' the casualties from HMS Sir Galahad.

Now anybody in the Gosport area is 'adequately served' by QA Hospital, Cosham a journey of some 15 miles through some of the worst traffic in the South Coast.

I would disguise some swear words here........

"My imaginary friend doesn't like your imaginary friend is no basis for armed conflict...."
