Not sure about the licence thingy but was down a set of rocks pooling for my tank on the weekend and seen a couple literaly taking thousands of them bags and bags of the things. Surely not for personal use... anyway must mean there safe :)

You don't need a license to harvest cockles for personal use.

Cockles are safe pretty much all year round.

I'm interested to know where you would go to get them ziggy ?

Nearest place I can think of to me (West Bay, West Dorset) is Studland Bay ?

Not tried there yet, but I've heard you can get razor clams there as well ....?

What about Charmouth & Lyme ?

seen razor clams being caught at studland on telly, not tried it meself. the kt boundary is exposed down there, thats the end of the cretaceous period, the land was lifted up & eroded before the tertiary rocks were laid on top. if you find it in the cliff ( about eye level as far as i can remember ) you will see a layer of mud about 1 inch thick, this is debris from the asteroid & is deposited worldwide

They won't kill you, not straight away, but all shellfish filter seawater over a long period. All the chemicals and heavy metals, dioxins etc get stored in the shellfish. Not a healthy meal these days.
