That photo of the "green algae" looks more like seaweed!

 

And I've just spotted where they got it from - it's sea lettuce, a *marine* form of the algae!

When they start becoming a problem species in the Scottish loch that they were introduced into, no doubt some bright spark will blame pike anglers for introducing them as livebaits.

Sounds like the UK may need to do as many other countries have - severely limit the amounts of phosphates that can get into your water.

 

Washing/cleaning products are a prime source unless regulated. Very similar situation to lead in petrol - gives great results for less cost than other options. That one pretty much needs to be regulated by forbidding or at least severely limiting permitted amounts in cleaning products

 

Agri fertilizers are another major source. Since a certain amount is needed for most food crops to grow, this one is more difficult since you have to control the amounts that find their way into the lakes and rivers.
