Super Specialist Duo?

My old JW Avon/Quiver is getting a little battered, I've damaged the quiver tipped top and I'm thinking of supplementing it with another similar rod for tench/chub/barbel duties. I've been looking at the Drennan Super Specialist Duo, which looks like a very nice piece of kit. A quick search of the forum shows that a few of you use and like 'em.

I mentioned to 'er indoors that I've been looking at them (and at the Okuma centrepin) but was doing some miserly umming and arring about it. Turns out that she's been stumped for what birthday present to buy me, and thinks that would be convenient! :yeah:

So, it's been out a while now, does it still stand up to the competition?

Steve I have been looking around for something for my tench/bream/barbel fishing and have read some good reviews for the Bob Church/Tony Gibson mutli specialist rod comes with both 1.5 & 1.75lb tc top sections, just down to where I can find the cheapest deal now.

I also have a couple of wilsons rods, old and newer versions.

just one more cast then I'am off home

There is only one new coarse rod that I REALLY need now, and it is an Avon Quiver type for roach and chub fishing on smaller rivers; I have been looking around for several weeks. Page 26 of this week's DTs (AT) featured "6 of the Best Specialist Rods", one of them being the Fox Specialist Duo at 68 squid (as opposed to 139 nickers for the Drennan Duo). Anyone seen, handled, fished with this Fox rod?

Looks live a very nice rod, but isn't it two standard tops of different test curves rather than a standard top and a quiver? Now if it came with a quiver as well, that would be perfect!

Buy another JW Avon Quiver rod.................you know it makes sense.

Mine has done a lot of sterling work and is still probably the best and most versatile rod I have ever bought.

Looking at this pageI think my needs fall between the Fox rods. The barbel float rod is too heavy at 1.75lb and does not come with a quiver. The specialist duo is too light for tenching and overlaps too much with my match rod and light quiver. The Avon, I should imagine, is a joy to use, but again a little on the light side for my needs.

Hi Steve

I haven't used a Fox Specialist Duo but I bought a Fox Specialist Barbel rod (1 1/2lb tc) a couple of years back, and it's exceeded expectations. With the quiver top it's great for small stream stalking and with the regular top it makes a brilliant light carp/tench/bream rod. Too much grunt for roach/dace/etc. but very light and forgiving. I've only ever caught one barbel on it but it's now my most-used rod. Worth checking out the Fox Duo I reckon.

Paul..Try and check out the TFG Whisper River and Stream, it has two tops (standard and quiver) and

has a full cork handle and for 49.99 you will well pleased. Some people knock TFG but this little rod is

a corker for the money and a great small stream Roach Rod.

I've been very happy with mine, too, but I want a look around at what's on the market.
