Barbel rod

I am off to the Hants Avon next week for a couple of days' barbel hunting - not something I have done before.

Does the team have any views as to the best rod for the job? I have a Shimano Beastmaster 1.75lb TC ("heavy") quiver rod. Is it up to it/right for it?

Nearly all my Barbel fishing is done with 1.75lb TC rods.

Nearly all my Barbel fishing is done with 1.75lb TC rods.

Most of my barbel fishing is done with a 3.5lb t.c rod (the Globetrotter Supreme which has a very supple, progressive action and delicate tip), but I also use it for most other freshwater species, so it is not only designed for big barbel.

I sometimes like using a 1 1/2 or 1 3/4lb t.c rod on little winding streams or tribs, but still prefer something with more power when I'm fishing in tight spots between trees and bushes etc.

There a lot of very good barbel rods on the market at moment. Take a look at the bfw i-power rod at:

Personally,i really think its down to the individual and especially the type of venue that you fish.I have two Barbel rods and fish for Barbel on a regular basis and both rods are 1.5tc.I find both these rods are more than adequate for my needs, even for snaggy swims.I can understand anglers that fish large snaggy big rivers such as the Trent need to use a larger tc rod,but i`ve seen anglers use these 2lb+ tc rods on my local rivers such as the Ouse and Ivel, there is just no need to use such a powerful rod. :wallbash:

The river is very clear, a little low and racing through.

Rod sounds fine.

Which bit are you planning to fish? Christchurch end or Ringwood?

Jealousy: totally irrational anger directed at people who happen to be richer, prettier, thinner, cleverer and more successful than you are.
