The problem with your hooks is the pattern, not the make. Preston are a good brand, but it sounds as if you are using one of their fine wire patterns.

The simple answer is to stop tying loops. Why do you need a loop? I'd expect a swivel tied with a Palomar knot to give me the maximum b/s of the line.

Been there, done that. At some point you have to pass the end tackle through a loop. Not easy with shot, hook, mono and braid in the mix...the times I've had to start again.

The packet didnt state the hook strength. I have now bought some more Preston hooks which are stated 'extra strong' but unfortunately they dont seem to be available in banded hair form.

Never had any problems tying mono trace to 20 lb braid using the albright and using the locked blood knot to the terminal lure; that set up has proved itself on barra to 60 lbs.
