I got some starlights from the Isle-of-Wight, I think.

They worked out at around 15p each.

I wrap an elastic band around the tip before theading the through the rings and stuff the starlight underneath it.

The reason the luminous paint works better after being exposed to natural light is that it requires the UV element. You should be able to purchase a key fob sized UV source from your local tackle shop.

I use one to recharge my luminous butt rests.

When I used to build a lot of rods I built several beach rods with LED's.I ran the wires through the tip ring and blank as Zziplexboy describes.I would mount the LED's on to the tip in a line (one behind the other) with resin. You could only get away with around 4-5 dependant on blank as to many would just result in the mounting resin cracking away from the blank. Most customers loved them and I never had any come back with problems.

Personaly though I dont like them! for all night fishing sea or freshwater I prefer a white tip with a light shinning on it.Tilley lamp for the sea and a beta light mounted at each end of the white for fresh. In the case of not wanting to use a Tilley like when fishing close in for big Bass or when you cant (like when wading) I dont think you need to see the tip that well as your holding the rod! A good reflective WHITE tip will also pick up any ambient light.A lot of the other "reflective" tapes are great with a light shone directly on them but pants without.Never found a luminous paint that Ive been happy with.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Cheers Lilypad. I didn't know that.

recharge my luminous butt rests.

For some reason I find that phrase amusing.

Anyway.

For beach fishing I like the smallest size of chemical lights, attached with clear tape. So long as you do a neat job of it and tape both ends, the line can't catch on it.

I've got a new Drennan quivertip rod which comes with some betalight attachments. The isotopes stick out at 90 degrees from the tip. I've not tried them yet, but they look to me as if they will tangle.

The LED with a wire down the blank looks interesting. There must be some scope for manufacturers to build something in. Carbon blanks conduct electricity well, maybe the blank could be engineered to have two conducting paths. I wonder if it would be possible to set something up which kept the power supply separate and used pick-ups on the tripod and on the rod? Probably hard to make reliable with saltwater about.
