I'm led to believe that Fox have their own overseas production and that the particular reel you're referring to was developed over a few years by a very well known carp angler.

Of course they have their own overseas production, as they do for all the other products they market - just like a load more tackle firms. Doesn't mean they own and run the production unit though.

Now having had an opportunity to take a closer look, there are outward differences (albeit minor) between the two reels. Its not an Interceptor and although there are design similarities, without knowing what's inside the reel and how well it performs, its difficult to judge. However, after having had a pair of fantastic Okuma Epix Pros for about 6-7 months I can't see me spending more than £39.99 on a fixed spool reel ever again.

Whilst there may be hundreds of different reel brand names, I doubt if more than a dozen companies exist (all in the far east) that have factories that make them. It's all down to badge engineering.... same design, slight colour changes, different name on the box. The only small batch high quality reels made today are by Shimano and Daiwa and specialist reel makers in their japanese factories and those retail for silly money (up to £6-700) The rest come from reel sweatshops in China, Taiwan, Phillipines and South Korea. Take a look at the Askari catalogue... a ridiculous number of same shape, same price, different name reels.

Okuma seem to have acquired a major share in the business worldwide very quickly and I understand that they make reels for just about every big name including Shimano. So I wouldn't be surprised if the Fox reel was made by Okuma to a Fox specification, although the 'designed by top carp anglers' is a bit of old flannel designed to extract more money out of carpers pockets. There appears to be nothing new about this reel, but then there's been nothing new in fixed spool reel design for some time. Get the line lay right, put enough quality bearings in to make it super smooth, put in a reasonably sensitive free spool system in, get quality control right and thats it. Okuma, Daiwa and Shimano have been doing that more or less for a few years now.

The most notable thing about Okuma is, that in spite of the name, the company isnt based in Asia. Its part of the Svendsen Sport Group...and its based in Denmark.

The F*x reel looks to have a push button spool - which is different on a front drag these days.

I pointed out this, and the differences on 'that pike forum' - but Andy's thread seems to have disappeared...

I have a couple of Epix Pro's too. They are the first and last Okumas I'll be buying. I'm not impressed with them.

Sorry to hear about your Okumas Dave. Apart from a stiff bail arm (which has worn in nicely over time) I thought they were good value for money.

There's nothing wrong with them - apart from the spring that operates the 'clicker' broke on one spool before I had even put line on. It's just that they feel, well, plasticky and cheap - the spools particularly are weedy things. Sure the gearing seems fine, but I have a horrible feeling all the bits will fall off!

They'll do for what little use I'll be giving them, they are the 30 size to be used for odd sessions after small things like perch and some small stream chub fishing, so they won't get much hammer! For the money they are okay, but I wish I'd gone for the Daiwas I had intended buying - but the dealer only had one in stock. My own fault for being impatient!

Shame...I was just about to make an exceedingly small but under the circumstances exceedingly generous offer for them :)

Yes I agree with you there Russell. An old Shimano Baitrunner than a new Fox reel :yucky:

Growing old is inevitable but growing up is optional
