Tesco To Sell Fishing Tackle

I reckon this could be a great thing, if handled properly. Supermarkets seem very keen on producing little leaflets so if they had a free one explaining rules and regulations, plus some nice pictures and useful phone numbers and website addresses they'd be onto a winner. If I was managing this I'd also invite local fisheries and clubs to advertise so people know where to start.

If nothing else, it would be useful to have bread, luncheon meat, sweetcorn, etc all in the same isle!

I've just had a look at the press release and it says that the tackle will be on sale in time for Fathers Day which is the 18th, but a note at the bottom says "The range will go on sale across 70 Tesco Extra stores in the UK and will be available from 19th June through to the 5th August 2006 or until stocks last."

The points people have made about some information are valid though. If nothing else 'first time buyers' should have info to hand regarding the legalities of the licence, and letting them know that you can't necessarily just pitch up and fish the first bit of water you see! Some clubs may have shocks coming when families turn up on their lake/river all armed with their Tesco starter kits!

In this weeks Anglers Mail it has a report on Tesco selling fishing tackle and what stores it will be available from.

I see that Nige Williams has still got his column in the mail even after his recent trip to Ireland.

Just a couple of comments on issues brought up in previous posts-

Give the customers "how to leaflets on Angling"-do they give away "how to take your dog for a walk/look after it" leaflets, they sell dog supplies?

And I could say the same for most of their other products to!

As said continental stores sell live baits and a good range of quality tackle (with a load of other crap as well admitedly) doesnt stop people going to tackle shops for advice/more specialist items.

Good points are-open 24hrs in a lot of stores, hopefully good prices AND ABOVE ALL a major change round in a major buisness's attitude to both angling and the "antis" why? well some may remember that it wasnt untill quite recent years that Tescos (and a few other supermarkets) wouldnt carry angling magazines in their range for the fear of reprisals from the antis (I once asked why they didnt stock them to be fobbed off with "not enough call for them" story.A mate, who both fish's and manages a Tescos told me the real reason) I think its positive.

Might make the tackle shops consider their "strong points" and get them off their backsides and getting back to the better days.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Why? First thing that would mean is that Tesco would then have to sell three different versions of the pack. On with a fishing license for England & Wales with a Rod Licence, another version for NI with a NI Rod License and yet another for Scotland & Sea anglers who need no permit.

Well why not!

They will be keen enough to sell the kit but drag perhaps drag their heels over the legalities of a rod licence behind their cheap fishing tackle.

I can hear it now when the Enviroment Agency chaaps stop someone with their Tescos fishing goody bags, oh well let them off after all they didn't know they needed a licence..........

Maybe it could be the collectable like the Woolworth Winfield range in er a century or so....

People may laugh but I tell you now the Winfield range of tackle was way way ahead of its time design wise. The amount of rods they had that would now be classed as "specialist rods" was amazing.I started collecting them just so I could show people how good they were! If Tesco's range is any where near as good (which it wont be as most tackle shops didnt stock a range like this) I will be buying the lot!

Every thing from baitcaster outfits to specialist still water specimen rods with salmon spinners and beachcasters and everything in between.Dont forget that this was the early 70's as well when you would have struggled to buy a carp rod in most tackle shops. One of their rods (the Surf Caster) a fibre glass, rung for fixed spool 11' job held almost "cult" status with Bass enthusiasts for fishing Peeler Crab.Top of the range design wise (wonder who their adviser was anyone know?)

And extremely good prices.............especially if you swopped the sticky labels (wernt cut in them days!) as we were prone to do as kids!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Budgie's dead right about the quality of some of the Woolworth's gear. I remember being very impressed by an Avon rod of 1¼lbs test curve, when most Avon rods were lighter than this. Additionally, they had some excellent copies of well-known lures.

The staff knew nothing about fishing of course, but they did have a well-known sea angling writer advising them. Mike Millman was it?

I wonder if Tesco will use an experienced angler to choose what they stock. Certainly Lidl and Aldi don't!

By the way, one of the UK supermarkets at the time used to sell fishing tackle, particularly Gilfin gear. Anyone remember which one it was?
