Quite a few of the sea angling magazines have articles on sea fishing in Norway, but i get the impression the english angler is a rarity in Scandinavia. Can anyone put me right on this - could you also (those who have been) tell me of your experiences please.

A few of my customers have been and told me of there experiences ,most said the fishing was good infact a good friend of mine had a 50lb halibut and cod upto 20lb but as for going back i dont think that was on the agenda.

Hi Gumbus. The fishing in Norway is great provided you go to the right place at the right time. I would suggest that anyone going on a sea fishing holiday should make sure that he is North of Alesund. Although there is some good fishing to be had near Bergen. This generally involves either long drives or flying which can be cheaper. Quite a few anglers go to the south as it's easy to get to and cheap but unfortunately the fishing is generally no better than at home.

Charter boats are rare and good charter boats, that is with highly specialised skippers as in the UK even rarer. If you get a self-drive make sure its big enough and fast enough to get you where you want to go. Make sure you have booked a guide for at least the first two days at the beginning of your trip, better still for the full duration. I work as a guide at various destinations and my anglers can expect to catch 20 lb cod and coalfish plus much bigger fish with a bit of luck. English anglers don't come over very often unfortunately. Most anglers tend to be German. Expect to pay upwards of 500 ponds per head excluding travel and fuel costs for a group of five people. Any less than that and you are cutting corners. Which might be okay and still can be fun; it just depends on how high your stands are.

Pal of mine Freddie from Drummore had a week there with two of his mates a short while ago. He was booked into some fjord resort in the south of the country. Between them they caught one small cod and a few small pollack. A very dissapointing trip for them. I am going over to Drummore tonight so will try and find out the name of the resort so you can cross it off your list :)

Came back from Bergen tuesday. I am fortunate to have friends with 20ft boats there. They live in the Morvik area a few miles north of central Bergen. We fished out of Eidvagen marina. The marina is in an enclosed bay on 3 sides and is less than a mile long. Its deep, averaging 200 ft with the entrance much more. There were plenty of ling. average in excess of 10 lbs. We had a couple over 15lb and my wife (lucky) picked up one of 30lb. No cod (time of year?) but several greenland halibut to 3lb, haddock about the same and pollack, coalies and gurnard. None huge but still good fun on light tackle. Best by far is 2 to 3 ft trace, single 5/0 hook with herring strip. Tried mackerel but limited success. Locals troll with feathers and lures of different sizes. Friend last year caught cod in same area in Sept under mackerel shoals to over 25lb.

Speaking to local tackle shop owner who said charter boats were available ex Bergen or further west towards North Sea. Price about 300 pds for 4-5 hr trip. Also said the ling in the outer Bergen harbour can get v.large at 30 kilo or so.

How the hell do you get the fish home from Norway without it turning to jam?

I live near Driffield and struggle to get fish back from Whitby in good condition!

The house in Norway has facilities. We fillet it, pack it and freeze flat. Put into cool bags with freezer packs to get home. Its only a couple hours flight. Total travel 4-5 hrs. So the fish is still ok.
