Tench Off The Top

Has anyone ever targeted tench off the surface? My mate saw a load on the top last night, but I wonder if they were just basking.

I once caught a tench of around 4lbs off the surface on a chum mixer intended for carp.Apart form that incident I have never seen a single tench feeding on surface baits.

I've caught a few tench off the top from several waters, all on floating crust.

I caught one off the top using chum mixer on a very hot day. It was about 1lb, the tench not the miixer!! The water was so hot, I think the fish was half stewed!

I've caught plenty off the top, although I've not targetted them, they've just come up from out of nowhere and hooked themselves generally.

Strange you should say at night Elton.Ive caught a handfull of Tench whilst fishing crust on the surface.But these were all back in the days when surface fishing with crust at night was a common carp tactic.Ive never had one take a mixer or floater cake or crust during day light though.

Like others I've had the very occasional tinca off the top - always an accidental capture and always on bread.
