Method Mix - Would this work?

Recommended Posts

Thinking of making my own groundbait, initially for use with a method feeder, would the following work?

50% bread crumb

30% marine pellet

20% crushed hemp seed

Mixed with corn steep liquor & corn sweet syrup, probable hookbait of sweetcorn.

Is it too heavy on the crumb side for this time of year?

I've done some initial research and think I can make save around 60% of what I would normally spend on 'packet' baits, especially if I buy in bulk.

Anyone got any suggestions or can verify what I've found?

Cheers All

Yes Rich, it will work...Only variation I would make is to use red crumb if you can.

I use a mix of approx 25% hemp, 75% halibut pellet mixed and soaked until pellet is soft, then add red crumb to stiffen it up.

Oil is optional :)

Caught me about 40 good Tench, a dozen or so eels up to 4lb+, several Pike and 30 or so carp up to 24lb+ all in the last 4 weeks :)

Used with the method rig I posted pics of a couple of weeks ago.......... Fiurther down the page..

Where are you looking to buy bulk?

I could get that all from my local mill.

Vitalin makes a great method mix and is dirt cheap. Has maize and bits already in it so you would not need to add much to it, maybe just a little crumb and crushed hemp just to bulk it out.

This might be a daft question ... making my own breadcrumbs, so would I just add a red food colourant?

Vitalin is on my list to try next .. once I find who sells it in the Hull area.

The only comment i would make regarding any method mix is that most mixes i have seen are to heavy on the binding agents,i my opinion the method ball only needs to hit the surface sink to the bottom and then break up and disburse.

I have seen some mixtures that resemble coconuts rather than say sponge balls.

When you have decided on your mix try a small batch in the sink and see what happens.

Regards.

Fishing seems to be my favorite form of loafing.

I know the joy of fishes in the river through my own joy, as I go walking along the same river.

What do you think if the float does not dip, try again I think.

I don't hink adding food colouring to your breadcrumbs will do you much good, the red colour in Most branded mixes will be Robin Red, but this is expensive so as you are trying to drop the cost get to your local indian food cash and carry and you can get red pepper powder or papika powder does the Job well and proper.
