Hi all.

I'm sure everyone here knows i'm referring to the drag on a reel. But seriously is there any difference between the 2? Has either have any advantages over the other, or is it purely a personal choice for which you prefer.

cheers.

For light fishing I use rear but have to say that for the big stuff front drags on Shimanos etc seem more robust.

Shame that means you will have to buy 2 reels

Fished since 2003, the rest of my life I just wasted.

A lot of people are saying that the rear drag reels are designed primarily for freshwater (for Shimano), but this is only in the dealers magazine.

Front drag is more realiable, but I also prefer rear drag. Regular washing and servicing must be the way forward.

I must admit this is what I thought (did'nt like to say just incase ....you know how it goes  ), so it is'nt the case the 2 are made from differing materials as a rule ie one more susceptible to Sea corrosion than the other?

"I prefer rear myself but have a feeling that the salty enviroment will play havoc in the medium term "

Have always been told that washing your tackle after use is a must, should get rid of all that salt from them nooks and crannies ;)

Front drag reels are alot strong in design.

I use small rear drag reels for light spinning etc. Front drag for anything else in the sea.

I got an top of the range shamino spinning reel, rear drag. Fine for lures and plug but casting a my shore bass rig ( drilled golf ball with a 5ft trace and a redgil on the end its a load of crap.

Have you tried sticking the rod in a rod holder and using a #1 wood? :D
