Advice on Waterproof Footwear

Recommended Posts

I'm in dire need of some waterproof footwear to use on my yak with open leg bib and brace. I normally wear military issue desert combat boots - hi legs - for everything but these are suede and nylon and soak up water like a sponge, leaving me wet and cold around the foot. Summertime I have nylon/neoprene shoes or diving boots but neither of these keep my feet dry.

Advice please chaps, and budget is IRO of £50.

I use these, http://www.chillcheater.com/products/shop....=3&pid=1282 with a neoprene dive boot over them. Your feet stay as warm as the boot will allow and are technically dry, although it doesn't feel like it. I am always amazed to find my feet are only slightly moist from sweat when I peel them off at the end of a session. However, be warned that their sizes are a bit on the small size. I ordered the XL and they're a snug fit for my bare size 10s, which means they won't accomodate the thermal socks I bought to go with them. :wallbash: However, they do roll up over my thermal longjohns and a pair of thin nylon cycing bottoms. As long as I do the neoprene seals up on my paddle pants really tight, no water gets in when I launch and land. Wish they did them in XXL; they'd be a good solution.

Tbh Mark, I think the only real answer to the problem is dry suit or paddle pants with integrated socks, which is going to be my next move; still can't decide which though. :D

Hi Mark,

I think this is your £50 solution ...

If you are mostly fishing The Broads these should do you proud but if you think it likely that you are going to get tipped out then a dry suit or dry trouser/dry cag set up might be the one to ultimately aim for.

A set of neoprene chest waders will keep you warm and dry as long as you dont need to swim in them.

I really cannot think of a better value solution.

Good luck with your deliberations.

Cheers guys,

Never been a fan of waders because you can float upside down in them... hence I bought bib and brace. I'll mostly be on the broads, if heading to sea it will be when it's flat and I have some NBC overboots for launching left over from when I was in the TA. Also, waterproof boots would allow me to keep my feet dry when bank fishing.

Loads of hiking boots about that are waterproof, but I want to go higher than my ankles. Might have to spend the money on Nixwax instead!

Bill, I think you've cracked it. I was looking at these: http://www.fishingmegastore.com/acatalog/Sea_Boots.html and some Mukluks, but these http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDis...gory_rn=4501471 look perfect for the yak.

Half price in the states. Think i'll try and get the lights.

There may be an import tax to pay if you do order them.

Proberbly be about £10 on that I would think. :headhurt:

Depends if a mate who has to fly over in a fortnight can get them in time.....

Got hit by Fedex for £18 for a whole bunch of scupper stoppers (xmas presents for my brother and his family with the fleet of Frenzy's) a month ago. Still made a saving but not as much as I'd hoped. couldn't get the large for love or money here so went direct and even $35 shipping and the £18 from Fedex saved me £15-20 I think.
