never caught a sizable bass locally,I'm always amazed when I catch one, usually fishing for codling etc on the beaches when I get one.

I have heard of bigger ones caught but I do'nt think people target them much around here.

We're quick to condemn the commercials but 'anglers'? are just as bad as it's a nursery area.

Do the nursery restrictions not apply to shore anglers then?
No only to boat anglers/fishermen but I'm not sure weymouth is protected?

 I'm afraid not. Under Magna Carta it is legal to catch and sell fish caught from the shore or a boat without power. The law has been refined to include size limits, mesh sizes, closed seasons etc. Due to the amount of bass around above the 36cm MLS this year and the lack of patrols by DEFRA, SFC's etc, 'anglers' and I use the term loosely, have been having a field day catching bass on live baits and selling them in the local fish markets. Up to 100 pounds of bass a day I've been told, nice little earner.

The attitude is, they don't stop the commercials, so why shouldn't I have some of it. The next problem is, it only takes one 'angler' to be caught and it will be used against the rest of us to undermine the Bass Management Plan. I watched a couple of boats in full view the other evening, livebait tanks full of mackeral and pout, fishing on the drift, too far away to see exactly what they caught but they did have bends in their rods and if you're using a live bait it's going to be bass that are the target.
