Andy, as has already been said, confused.com is a great place to start. E-sure are pretty good too but I think you need a decent driving history behind you for them.

This year is an odd year for car insurance as just about everyone I know is playing 'swap the insurance company' due to BIG hikes in premiums this year. An example.......last year my fully comp 1.4 2001 astra was 236 including all the bells and whistles but this year it came in at 377.........thats a big percentage hike (norwich union direct who i've used for donkeys years). I managed after MUCH searching to get MMA to insure me for 281.......cheaper but still a healthy percentage hike on last years premium.

One of your problems is the size of engine........I KNOW its a diesel and wouldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding but its a 1.7 litre and its all they see mate, and 1.7 is big to them blighters. Unless you get your diesel cheap (your best mate is a truck driver or sommat!? LOL) then I'd consider swapping motors for the 1.4 petrol variant. Almost as good on fuel, cheaper tax and save you a fortune in insurance (check it out on confused.com by using a reg number off a forecourt car to try quotes for different makes and models of cars).

Hope this helps a bit.

Long trotter........I get **** off with all the no document drivers around by me (you can always tell them because rather than driving like judges due to their lack of docs, they drive as if they dont give a stuff in their dented and battered Mk iv escort estates(not that I wish to stereotype or anything! LOL)).....how come the van with the flaps for rear windows with the mobile ANPR cameras ALWAYS targets the same bloody spots so the crims just skirt around them? Why do they not ever operate at night either? A whole rake of valid knickings going begging if you ask me!

Phil they always tackle the same ****** spots because thats where the most revenue is made.

Its nowt to do with catching crimes or anything else. Revenue mate, thats what its about.

my mind not only wanders-- sometimes it leaves completely.

Hi all

i was told that if i go 3rd party and pay for NC protection then its cheaper and works out basically better but i could be well off(x army friends advice)

im with budget and for fully comp and 3yrs NC it costs around 500 squids which is still fairly high for being 30.

this includes breakdown on my 306 diesal

as for legal exspenses i get them but i found last year that it barly helps cos the little knob who wrote my car off is gonna basically walk free even though he didnt even report it and claims i was lost(thus crawling )which i was cos i was just about to turn into a junction i live up.10-15mph

he admitted overtaking on a blind junction but claims i wernt indicating so as the cops wernt called its my word etc etc

his car was a crap ford kA and mine was a volvo(need i say who still had a moving car after)

insurance wrote mine off(too expensive as it was a volvo480 and nearly classic:)

still i fight and 50/50 they wanted was trown down the toilet by me(now the insurance is trying to screw me (something to do with damage area)

his front pas and my rear drivers side arch

i saw him he didnt full stop! 45 in a 30 is speeding but i cannot pull that cos no witnesses.

2nd car in one year and they still let him drive?:)

first was reversing into someone without looking but the insurance solicitor says thats not really important?????????funny cos nc reflects your ability doesnt it(nc=no accidents)

funny cos apparenty they wont bring his history up in court which is where im dragging his ass.

steve

sod everyone else,do it anyway:)

sod duck season lets have tvla season!

capita beware(thiefs with badges)

They tell us if a vehicle is un-taxed, un-insured, stolen, been involved in crime, thats why number plate cloning is so big

I cannot go into to much detail, there are fixed sites in certain parts of the country, one which is in the public domain is the ANPR scheme in the city of london within the ring of steel as it was called which protected the city from criminals and IRA terrorists entering the zone. infact ANPR was invented after the St. Mary Axe and the Bishopsgate bombs.

Click the link to our site

P.S they can be installed on a motorbike too.

http://www.devon-cornwall.police.uk/v3/roa.../about/ANPR.htm

I think its great, as i pay my insurance and tax, and mot up to date....the reason i asked is that, we all hate speed cams...but could they also be used to do the same. if your caught on one, could that info then not be check, to see if it was taxed insured and mot at the time it was caught,

Phil, A lot of people confuse the DVLA Vans for ANPR, Normal pocedure for ANPR vans is to have motorcycle and/or Patrol Vehicle Support, so if you see such vehicles parked up near by it will be ANPR, As for villians avoiding the areas, it does happen, it's a cat and mouse game in the big towns, the good thing is they cannot avoid the Traffic vehicles on routine traffic patrol, so our paths do inevitably cross. :)

Sean, yes if a vehicle is flashed by say a Gatso, and there is film in it at the time :P a full check is done on the status of it, eg tax, insurance etc.......

where do you get your jokes from i have ran vauxhalls for 20 years and there is no way a 1.4 petrol compares to a 1.7 diesel in a fuel comparison unless you add 2 tonne of horse sh*t to thepayload of 1.7

and put helium in the 1.4 tyres

Fair comment, but the advantage of running an old diesel isnt what it used to be. People seem to forget that diesel used to be CONSIDERABLY cheaper than petrol but now its actually more expensive. You have to factor this into the equation.

Another thing worth mentioning is the additional road tax costs of a bigger engined diesel car. In extreme cases this can equate to an additional couple of tanks of fuel which again factors into the 'price per mile' your driving costs you. Add to that the possible HUGE savings in insurance costs to someone with an unproven driving record such as andy and the you'll see its not quite as simple as 'my 35mpg compared to your 50mpg'

Enjoy the rest of your beer :)
