Finding that little goldmine...

I used to go with a school chum to his uncle's farm near to Biddenden, which he told me was known as the place of a thousand lakes. There were many small lakes, mainly full of lilies, but we spent many a long day catching 4oz roach, rudd and perch. Never any monsters, but very enjoyable. If you look on a map you can still see many many blue spots

The two best times to go fishing are when it's raining and when it's not

Its surprising how many little ponds exist ,get a large scale map and have a look.

In the early 70's a chum an i spent most weekends knocking on farmers doors asking for permission in a 20 mile circle of folkestone .

Most said. Baint nothing in ther but let us try and most had lots in ther ,mostly rudd but some great mixed waters .

Worth a try

Realised you cant fish in a circle at folkestone but we sea fished as well LOL

I've never fished a virgin pond either. I do remember a little pond in the middle of Thetford Forest in Norfolk which we used to pass as we cycled around in the summer as kids. It didn't look like it held fish, but one day it had obviously suffered a massive crash and everywhere you looked were these absolutely huge dead rudd - nothing else. They were really, really big and sadly really, really dead. Wish I'd fished it...!

I've explored and fished quite a few bits of out of the way rivers, but I doubt any were genuinely 'unfished'.

I think I'm right in thinking that the Rev Alton's former record rudd and tench both came from waters he stocked that regularly dried up in Thetford Forest. Ringmere perhaps?

Anyone remember?

I too got permission to fish dozens of ponds on the Kentish Weald near my former home in Headcorn, and eventually this led to my creating my gravel pit fisheries at Wingham.

Wingham has now taken over my life so be careful what you wish for.......!

  • 1 month later...

Well i said i would follow up and what promised to be attractive turned out to be ugly as apart from some very small perch not a thing and i tried everything over 3 trips even night fishing with the company of a large fox wondering what i was doing on his patch. So not all is as good as it first looks something i have found out a lot especially over the last 5 years for some reason?
