Use the basics sweetcorn ,pellet, and meat oh and bread and dog biscuits for off the top in summer. They are cheaper then boilies and the like and can catch you just as many fish.i have wasted alot of money on these so called specialist carp baits an never had a carp on them,my personal favorite is tubed meat.

My tip is dont give up.

If you have only just started, its the hardest time of year.

Use the smallest baits and hooks and lightest hooklinks you can get away with.

Neil,as a couple have allready said your question is a bit wide mate! if you can narrow it down a bit it would help people give you good answers.Try telling us about the water(s) you are fishing ie size of water ,types of species present size/ammount of carp.

One tip I can give regardless is to keep things simple and dont get sucked in by all the hype! oh and welcome to AN by the way!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Just get out there and get plenty of fishing in.

As you fish you will find you have questions you would like answering, remember them and ask them when your on the forum again.

Then on each fishing session you will learn a bit more.

Books and videos/dvds can help the beginner but you cant beat going fishing with another experienced Angler .

Enjoy your fishing neilfaith

Neil, it may seem there' s a lot to learn, but that applies to all of us. I've been fishing for 50 years or more and can honestly say, I'm learning all the time, so don't despair. Forums like this are a priceless source of information.

One tip I'll offer is to pay particular attention to depth when float fishing. Always plumb up before starting, even if you think you know the water, then if bites don't come, alter a little either way at a time until they do.

All the best of luck, let us know how you get on :) :) :)
