DRAG

same as most reels ,its set below the breaking strain of the line so if moby heads for the horizon he can take line .....and not you :D lever drags are great you can have them on tight but if mr fish does a runner you can loosen it off before mr rod breaks ,a tip always on returning home wash the reel then loosen the drag right off ,it stops the plates "welding" together :)

You want the reel to be able to give a little line, as not to exert too much pressure of the rod tip when it's under load. Apparently, with braid it's a good idea to set your drag pressure to a third of your b/s of the line you're using. I definatley have it looser when using braid, but shore fishing with mono, I just undo the drag from tight until you can pull line of by pulling on your weight and putting a healthy bend in the rod tip when the line is through all of you rings.

A bit hard to explain without showing actually

Ant?

I think all has been said. Drag is simply a safety measure. When trying to pull in a large fish, the drag will release line when your outfit is put under too much pressure. Either by yourself or the fish.

Nowadays you`ve no excuse for losing a good fish because it smashed you. If your drag is set correctly you can pull in a monster on light tackle. Unless of course he strips all your line?

The drag = the clutch on a fixed spool.

Both are called the drag in the US but not sure about UK useage on this.

Most modern casting reels (multipliers) will have a "star drag" - so named because of the shape of the adjuster piece.

When I used to go carping I got into the habit of backwinding with the drag set tight (FS). Don't know if anyone has ever used this method to control big fish but it is sensitive and very controllable. You dont get that horrible lurch when the drag suddenly slips and playing the fish becomes a whole new ball game. I used to handle big powerful carp who were hell bent on reaching the safety of the reed beds and never did I feel that they ever would because the fish is tired out by the measured and grudging pay-out of line.

Try it next time you hook a fat bass heading for the nearest snag!

tho dont try this with your multipier !

LOL - rufus, that is because of those itty bitty rear drag things on most of the UK fixed spool reels. :)

A good front-drag reel will start playing line out smoothly with a big fish.

And a good drag can hold even pressure against a big fish much better IMO than even the most skilled back-winder.

Bumper,

Not to knock Chesters advice, but don't loosen off the drag completely after using/washing as you end up with water between the washers which can eventually cause the drag to get loose and slip, especially on cheaper models. Good drags aren't so bad as the composit washers have greater grip. Plus, salty water in around the washers (and handle bearing on multi's) can corrode them over time.
