Predatory Barbel?

dant

Recommended Posts

As for livebaits the only fish Ive never caught on live baits are stickle back, gudgeon, bleak, dace and minnow! and I reckon thats a size thing only! Oh never had a grayling or Crucian in species commonly over a pound either and even though Ive not had a rudd on a livvo Ive had them on lures!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Here is a link to a video of large carp, and also Comizo barbel, chasing small live fish in an aquarium.

It looks to me like you've solved with that, GLOBE.

Seems the same behaviour as seen in dants film.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Those conditions are totally differant from the wild. Obviously the fish in the tank were used to eating small fish and it was obvious that they had been fed in that manner many times before. I don't believe for one minute that wild Carp are that predatory. Ok they will eat fry etc but looking at that video clip anyone would be led to believe they're as predatory as Pike.

A very misleading video in my opinion.

How do you feed live fish to them? You can only put them in the tank, it's up to the carp and barbel if they chase, and eat them. They will only do that, if it's natural to them.

obviously the fish are used to food being dropped in probably at certain times of day so they'll just associate the the small fish with food. We know that virtually all fish are predators in one form or another so it's easy to exagerate it in these conditions.

I accept what Tigger is saying in that to a degree the fishs artificial enviroment is influencing their behaviour.I could agree that much the same could be said about venues such as Claydon Lakes (very small, overstocked and therefore "hungry" water) where Ive caught/seen caught several carp on fish baits (live and dead) meant for catfish.

But whilst both Perch and Eel fishing with small live and deads on a wide variety of waters Ive caught/seen caught far to many "non predatory" fish to not believe that even in a "natural" enviroment it isnr a regular part of their diet. Not just my experience either try talking to any eel or perch specialist.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Comizo barbel are a predatotry species - see the link on my previous post where they are fished for with live bait, dead baits and large lures.

I've heard of carp becoming preoccupied with feeding on fry in some waters. The feeding behaviour in the tank is not entirely unnatural.

If fish are hungry then they will things out of the ordinary the same as most creatures.

If Carp were as predatory as this video would lead you to believe then how could you keep them in other community aquarium/pond set ups ?

As I've already said it's common knowledge most fish are predatory on occasion but not so much as specialists like Pike etc. Don't forget You can catch Pike on a Boilie but that isn't it's usual grub.

At the end of the day fish are opportunist feeders and will eat what's available if there hungry enough even if it's not their usual diet.

I doubt this video will get the Carping enthusiasts swapping their boilies for dead or live baits !!
