bulk line help

Hi all, hope the Chrimbo build up is going ok for you all

 

Righty, Im in need of new line. The only problem is that Im likely to need quite alot of it!

 

Most of the lines Ive seen are only sold in 100m spools in the lower breaking strains, but this would work out expensive.

 

Does anyone know where I could buy 1/4lb bulk spools of lower breaking strain line? something like 4-5lb b.s.

 

The lowest b.s Ive seen in bulk is 6lb, but at 0.24mm diameter it might be a lil thick.

 

Any thoughts?

This stuff got top marks in an Angling Times test a good while back. Never tried it myself though so can't offer a personal opinion.

I've got loads of that Mullarkey line from 2lbs to 12lbs b/s and it seems fine.

 

Only one thing though. There seems to be some anomalies in thickness v breaking strain with certain poundages. EG The 12lbs is more like 18lbs b/s and the 6lbs is more like 8lbs.

 

I someday intend to borrow a micrometre and see what's really going on.

DAre you after a floating or sinking line? If a sinker I'd recommend Gold Label's Pro Gold. See my field test at http://anglers-net.co.uk/reviews/progold01.htm

I cant say Im fussed as to whether it floats or sinks to much, Im just after a good quality "general" line (in bulk spools) for both float and ledger work.

For ledgering and most stillwater float fishing you want a sinker, especially if it's windy.

For most river float fishing a floater is better as it helps the float go downstrem naturally. In each case the wrong choice can cost you fish.

 

However, up to a point you can change the characteristics of a line by adding floatant or, to make it sink, fuller's earth or washing up liquid.

 

So if you don't want to splash out on both types decide what your main useage will be. Bear in mind that most lines float, relatively few sink.

A floating line is probably the best for me, getting a line to sink after a cast is no big hassle anyway.

 

The only problem is finding bulk spools of the stuff!

What problem? In addition to the links above, here are a couple other sources. I use the top one and can't fault it. Note that the 'Crappie' is a US fish that is best fished for with light gear and that accounts for the name of the line. It is not a comment on the quality.
