Shock leader

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I'm relatively new to carp fishing, this season i plan to do a lot of it. I've been reading up on rigs, one of the things that baffles me is shock leaders. Don't get me wrong i understand

the purpose behind them but i'm not entirely sure how you set one up.

Try as i might i can't find a thorough step-by-step guide which shows you the complete set-up including the hooklink.

Many thanks in advance for your help!

All the best

Nick.

I would second that although I would reccommend using around 24" of 'sink rig tube' this is like normal silicone tubing but is impregated with something to make it sink. This will serve two purposes:- to protect the fishes scales during the fight and to camouflage the last couple of feet of mainline. I also wrap small lengths of lead wire at 6 inch intervals and mark it up with a marker pen just to break up the outline.

Shock leaders are generally used when distance casting so unless you intend to fish distances over 100yds you shouldn't need one.

Why not just use 40 or 50lb braid on the spool ?

You can cast as hard as you like then and not mess about with knots all over the place.

That rather depends on what you are casting and how far

20lb braid will be plenty strong enough to let you chuck even 4oz.

I have recently been using a "shockleader" using 8mtrs of clear 22lb Amnesia, not really as a shockleader, more so because it is pretty well invisible when lying on the bottom (my lakes are crystal clear at the moment)

So you can get the best of both worlds :)

Braid works very well under a steady strain but is liable to snap very easily under a sudden shock, ie reel tangle etc. 4 oz and a powerful cast could snap 20 lb braid comfortably. having said that most carp casting is likely to be of the gentle lob variety rather than a full blooded beach casting pendulum so this is not likely to arise.

I certainly would not want to be casting 4oz leads on 8lb line.

Easy enough thing to do.

To keep this topic from getting confused and to offer help to others who have the same question but who only read and never post to ask about what puzzles them, I'm locking this topic.

It is a good question so please open yourself a new topic asking about lead core.
