Quite starnge how it's worded:

Any angler aged 12 years or over, fishing for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels in England (except the River Tweed), Wales or the Border Esk and its tributaries in Scotland must have an Environment Agency rod licence.

You don't need one for coarse fish in Scotland.

Unless you're fishing the Border Esk and its tributaries.

...So you don't need one in Scotland (other than for the above).

Tigger - That "rip off" as you put it, is closely monitored by ANGLERS! There is a posting from Elton re Cambridge rugby club. That work is all done by monitoring by the EA which uses licence money to do it!

Ah but that has nothing to do with angling Klein, they are charged by the Gov't to monitor our waterways. The fact that fish and fowl and insects etc benefit from the clean water and by that token anglers, would still be done without a license fee.

There are quite a few taxes and fees that strike me as possibly a bit OTT but paying a license fee for fishing if you fish is not among them. I pay mine gladly while I pay some of the others very grudgingly. Since I routinely fish in at least 3 states during the year and need a license for each (with two of them being higher cost non-resident licenses) I pay quite a bit more than you do for UK rod licenses too. You pay to play and that has always seemed quite reasonable to me.

Given the increased inspection that seems to be happening in the UK, lack of a proper license could cost you quite a bit too and is probably more likely than in previous years.
