Odd Behaviour

Fished today and have never seen trout behavior like it. Trout were leaping out of the water everywhere i looked, maybe three times in a row, they were not feeding, after catching a few and giving them a check over i found small clear lice on them. I was told that the water used to be a course fishery and the lice were left over :yucky:

Anyone come across this type of thing ?

Is this stressing the fish ?

It does seem that lice provoke the fish to leap, probably trying to rid themselves of the blighters.

They can also shoal tightly together, another form of defence

It just looked like a circus, trout leaping clear of the water all over the lake, i ve fishing just about every trout lake in the North East this is the only one to put on such a show.

Coarse fish dont do this do they? Been to the fishery in question three times each time the same thing. :fish:

which fishery is it carl?

I had wild brownies leaping everywhere this weekend, but they were attached to the line. It's a 2 mile hike from the nearest parking but so worth it.

the links worked fine this time, i've never been there, what did you think of it?

I've very very limited experience of stillwater trout fishing but the few occasions I have been was usually for a few hours in between meetings when I was in a new area, I have a list of a few which I plan to try out, but as you can imagine, with usually only a couple of hours to spare between (often) stressful meetings, a pleasant venue is often more important than size and quantity of fish.

Ive been three times now and had a great day each time, it's not a big water by a long way, but big isn't always best. For me it's a place to fish, it's small size gives me the confidence to try those flies that don't come out of the box very often. You know you are covering fish you can see them as explained above.
