Pike Fishing

That was one rough day Peter! Not been back but would like to as it looked good.Have you fished it again?

Totally agree with Chris re rods.Tiger ty casting a live bait with a 3lb+ TC carp rod!

As for pike fishing "tidying itself up" well I reckon its about time pike fishing stood up for itself and got the authorities to look at some of the stupid restrictions it has placed on us! The spreading rods out rule is a complete farce as the reasons often given for it being in place (ie poor bite detection/deep hooking) are the reasons why its done!!!!!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

I'll take it easier on you Budgie. All rowing will be done via steering wheel (when distance is needed) or by foot pedal when slow and move-while-fishing is in order.

That Waller person actually made me work at propelling the boat until he finally figured out I had no clue what I was doing and we were moving slowly to the wrong places.

Until you become an experienced pike anlger i would stick to one method at a time therefore you are less likely to end up deep hooking pike. i love my lure fishing and can't wait to get back to my local river and give it a go.

take a look at my blog

I prefer using an old Daiwa tournament whisker kevlar Carp rod 2 1/4 test for live baiting or even the diaflash rods at 2 1/2 test.

Bugie I've had no prob's at all.

For now I'll stick to the 2 1/2 lb carp rods, The largest deadbait I've used is a joey mackeral, I don't think the bigger the bait the bigger the prey, smaller pike must eat larger prey, especially when dead. If I decide to take it up full time and move away from bit bashing Then i'll look into more specialist tackle. Some of the lures I've seen, ie rapala are around £14 each so just a small selection can set you back a lot of money. Possibly all lures have their day but when you're starting out it's very difficult to make the right choices. That's where you guys come in?

A bad day's fishing is better than a good day at work

You can probably 'get away' with using carp rods on rivers with small baits where distance isn't required....often in these places a small underarm flick to put a bait under a tree/bank feature is all you need anyway.

The prices of some lures is staggering, especially some of the Rapala ones which are top quality. I'd concentrate more on getting a good spread of lures to suits different situations rather than fewer but more expensive ones.

Some shops will do reasonable quality lure packs which contain a selection of types i.e floating plugs, shallow divers & spoons/spinners at a good price. All you may wish to do it to change the hooks for getter quailty (and smaller on some) and your off.

Well having and using both pike and long range carp rods at 3lb TC (PROPER rods not just ones that say carp or pike on the sticker) all I can assume is that you arent wanting to cast live baits as far as me or I need to learn your casting technique! Not that I would really class the rods you mention as long range carp rods (well not by todays standards any way).

Maybe your right about them not being Long Range Carp rods.

I have a pair of Kevin Nash Infinity Whisker Kevlars Long cast 2 3/4 test but up to now havn't used them "at all". As I say the rods I use are either 2 1/2 or 2 1/4 test and I use them for dead or live bait without any prob's. Maybe I don't cast as far as you, I don't know.

Bugie as far as I knew the Diaflash and Kevlars are proper Carp rods. Both these rods have a good action and are far from being pokers. They're great to play a fish on.

Yes they definately are mate.Daiwas have always had quite a "soft" action for their TC's as well.

I do see what you are saying though as indeed many middle range (or even top range but poorly designed) Pike and carp rods are identical blanks and only the graphics/"designation" different. Some thing to bear in mind if buying a set of rods for a specific job but with your run of the mill 12' rod thats to be used for general carp or piking then not so much of an issue.
