Couldn’t lay my hands on the preferred ‘jelly brains’, and the last of the big ‘cola bottles’ went to some horrible spotty git in front of me…devastated mate! Good news is there’s some smashing new ‘strawberry dinosaurs’. I’ll grab a fiver’s worth tomorrow and scran ‘em during the Man U/Arsenal game.

i've been stuffing my coupon with lime doritos and mild salsa dip while watching the matrix tonight, but do yourself a favour, don't pick your nose with the same hand you dip with, the chilis a bit nippy

Unbearable, isn't it? The suffering of strangers, the agony of friends. There is a secret song at the center of the world, and its sound is like razors through flesh.

First piece of advice is don’t seek magic answers or shortcuts….there are very few. Ultimately, the only person that can make you a better angler is you.

Develop a positive mindset; work your socks off; learn well from your mistakes and use these lessons to cut the next steps in your progression.

Hunt positives in any negatives; there is no such thing as a waste of time in fishing. Even bite-less blank sessions can be of solid worth if you dissect events.

Work harder than the opposition both in preparation and competition…coping with sleep depravation is something that all top anglers carry and live with. Cultivate your own ideas, and travel to away venues in order to broaden your horizons and develop a wider rig, bait and general skill repertoire.

Develop rig building and bait collection/maintenance regimes.

Target setting is very important. Set yourself realistic early targets and work flat out to achieve them. At no time allow yourself to get carried away with any successes however, ‘cause fate is a fickle beast. The old angler adage that you are only as good as your last result is nonsense. Fact is; you are only as good as your next result. Burn this discipline into your brain and you will maintain your enthusiasm and remain fresh to new challenges.

Understand ‘staying power’ and what is required to achieve it.

Know that the real match fishing world can be viciously cut-throat, and ask yourself if you are equipped to cope…not everybody is. There’s little point in killing yourself for years to crumble when the pressure kicks-in.

Regularly bathe in vinegar to thicken your hide, because the more accomplished you become and the more successes you achieve, the more people will try to knock you down.

Failing all of this, invest in a set of golf clubs!

Can you elaborate on that please steve?

I feel I have room for improvement here, but really dont know where to begin (I ask people where to find the big whites and they just wont tell me, Only joking m8).

I work very hard on the bait front, can I improve?

What about rigs? I only really ever use 1, what others could I try for shore cod?

Another good tip (if a boat match) is to develop an extremely sneaky knack to catch a Dab over hard hard ground when been plagued by Mackerel to just pip the other angler your leading the boat with for the boat win. Seen this knack been applied during a match in the summer .... gives a psychological edge as your jamminess can dishearten other anglers you are up against. :)

Of course, I have no idea what you mean Gillies? But good advice would be when the rub-of-the-green happens to lean in your favour…grab-it-and-grin!!

Psychology is a powerful tool, but wage not psychological war; rather keep screwing the fishing nut while allowing any wavering opposition to suffocate in their own mind-mist.
