Guess the weight

Recommended Posts

I'm new here, returning to angling after a 15 year break, and I wasn't that good in the first place, but this looks fun so here goes...

Right, based on my hand width (minus thumb) of 4", I make that 20" nose to tail, and with Barbel weighing on average under 2lb per 18" (Source: The Complete Book of Fishing) I make that a 2lb 8oz fish maximum (allowing for you having bigger porkies than me).

Damn fine looking fish though.

Very interesting so far - we have a margin at the moment of between 2lb 8oz and 7lb

Any more estimates?

I find Barbel diff. to guesstimate unless you can see the girth/muscle , that one weighs 5 and a half pound ?

Yes 5.5lb looks about right to me to.

I don't want to start an argument but I think your being a bit mean with the weight, at under 5lb.

John, hows that being mean mate? Thats what it looks to me.

I do know how barbel can be deceptive though. Seen pictures of sixes that look like threes so they can be tough to guesstimate.

I`m just going off the fishes length and its shape.

I know what you mean SW. I've been looking for one of the rare pictures of me with a barbel, ( I usually avoid cameras pointing in my direction). The barbel in my photo, I know weighed 5lb 4oz, and it looks a bit smaller than Anderoos.

It can only be a guess, and each to their own, but I'm sticking to my 'guesstimate'. (Has that now become a word? ).

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John
