Casting Braid

Ken Davison South Wales

Recommended Posts

I have been fishing over some mussel beds and shale rock areas and feel that my current setup with a 12lb iron silk main line and 60lb tapered shock leader is putting to much strain on the main line.

I want to up grade the lbs and have been thinking a 25lb to 30lb braid would be about the same diameter as my current mono so would not reduce reel capacity, but I want a good casting braid that lays well on the reel on retrieve.

Has anyone used one which they could recommend from experience rather than me going on all the write ups of manufacturers?

Hi Ken, i'm not a shore angler but i would wonder what would happen if you was to get a birdsnest. Bit expensive if you couldn't untagle it.

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

dynon 3000 , best in my opinion , but useing braid over mussel beds could get a little more expensive than casting and birds nests , under load braid has very little abrasion resistance and will go if it has caught on any rocks or mussel , but again the only way to find out is try u might be surprised , you also have to be super smooth in your casting style !!

Well I do try my very best to avoid the dreaded birds nest, the abu 6500 ct mags do a good job and I have to go back quite a long way to the last one which was entirely my fault for forgetting to apply the mag breaks on an after dark cast, even with mono that one was unsolvable and resulted in a re-spooling the following day.

There are some round stiffer braids about now days aimed at casting around the £30 per 300yds but having not tried one and being twice the price plus a bit of my current iron silk was hoping someone had had a dabble and could assist.

I use that on some of my reels when boat fishing and have to agree, even some of the more expensive stuff doesn't appear to be soft, subtle, It does not change it's properties like some of the other. Don't like the stuff thats coated at all.

Personally, I'd be wary of using any braid over mussels or barnicals. It just doesn't have the abrasion resistance to do the job.

Unless distance is a major factor, stick to mono.

I was going to use a mono shock leader about 10m. in the hope that in conjunction with my 5m rods it would protect the braid to a certain extent.

Plus a lot of these new braids are boasting high abrasion resistance, it would appear from your comments that perhaps they are stretching that point a bit :D

I use PowerPro 50lb bs on an Abu 6500 CS on one of my beach rods and have had no tangle, or abrasion problems with it at all.

It cast smoothly, although I would suggest you get the line wet first, before you really power cast.

I also use about 40-50 ft of 60 lb mono as a shock leader.

Sounds useful, what sort of line capacity do you get with 50lbs ?

I have 20 Lb Berkley Fireline on a Abu 5500 CS.

Use a short Mono leader of 30 LB, just three turns on the reels spool is all thats required.

Its been on there a year now, no bedding in, no nests, wind knots etc and now i have the confidence

to really cast with it and guess that i put out approx 30 yards of 18LB backing

Its the last 80 yards of the spool i bought years ago, I put the rest on a 7500, but

could still cast with it.

For the application you suggest, braid is top notch.

Foot note: Power pro, load it onto your spool tight first time. Snag or catch a heck of weed, or catch

the fish of a life time with slack loaded braid, you are doomed, doomed i tell ya. :headhurt:
