Can anyone give me some good tips on perch fishing. I want to have a go this winter at targeting Perch.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hi kestrel

perch can be very hard to catch as pike can beat them to the bait

but the way to do it is dead baiting or a lure there the only to ways i no im sure theres many more but these are very successful

oh and another tip is if you do hook a pike be extremely careful

hope this helps

tights lines and hope theres a perch on the end of it :D

I have packed my carp gear away for the winter and have started my usual piking, which will take me through to spring. I thought I'd have a serious try at Perch for the winter. Vareity is the spice of life and all that !

I was spinning on the river a couple of weeks ago, after about two hours and probably about a mile and a half of river I started getting perch following the lures but never quite taking them, after about 15 minutes my mate turned up and asked how I was getting on ,when I told him he rushed off and came back with his tackle and some really big juicy worms .He trotted a float down with one of his worms on a size 6 hook and started catching them straight away, there was some big ones as well.So I suppose that could be a good method of perch fishing(locate them with a spinner then fish for them with a worm) but use a wire trace just in case you do get a pike.

I have had them follow my lures in when spinning for pike up on the Ouse near Ely. They are funny to watch as they seem like they are " just seeing what's going on "

I'm certainly no perch specialist since the few around here are tiny but I can say that if a lure is getting follows and no takes, an immediate cast to the same location with a different style lure (or with a worm as already suggested) is often productive.

Fish that follow are in at least a moderately active feeding mode but may be selective about what they want to eat.

For this reason, I strongly suggest that when lure fishing you keep a 2nd rod near to hand with a totally different style & colour of lure since a recast with it a few seconds after the follow will very likely produce a bite.

I also STRONGLY recommend you read the articles Steve linked. Lots of expert advice there.

Hi Kestrel

Sometimes the fish just don't want to play, occasionally I've had them chasing my lives around the swim then simply bugger off. Pound to a penny though, if you were to stay on till the lights fading and try again you may well get some takes. I nearly always see Perch striking near the surface, come last light.

On the flip side, some days I've had one fish take the bait, for another to then grab the float and one cheeky beggar grab the lead!

PS. I started a new Perch thread tonight so hopefully people can update us on their progress, offer loads of tips and bang up a few pics of their successes. It'll be interesting to see how we all get on, in the coming months. :)
