I leave the lid off the box, this stops them sweating even without maize etc. Just make sure they're not near enough to the top of the box to do a "Great escape".

 

That works, so long as you've got somewhere safe to keep them and they've dry to begin with. I've got a mouse in my shed, though, and I've seen pet mice go nuts for insects, so I think I might lose a few that way with the lid off Knowing my luck, it would tip the tub over.
