Kennet at Newbury

Just had my first ever session on a river at the Northcroft Rec in Newbury. Sometimes work in Newbury and had an hour to spare so thought i would have a try. Fished the small riverlet upstream of the footbridge (free)and had a great hour. Trotted double maggot (first time)caught a dozen fish. Some dace, some roach and some rudd(i think)and my first ever Chub. Chub was just over a foot long and heavy set. Had to assemble landing net while playing. Didn't have scales or camera. Any guess on the weight as i would guess it was probably a PB. Roach was a good 9 inches any estimate on that also. Also had a fish about 7 inches that a thought was a roach but no red eye. Think maybe it was a Rudd but no upturned mouth. is it less pronounsed as the fish get bigger. Any guess on that as that would be a PB as well.

Hope someone can guess. Recently returned to fishing some not good at estimating

Thanks

A good days fishing there, nice one

The mystery fish could well be a roach/rudd hybrid, a pretty common mix where both species are found together.

And welcome to Anglers Net, I hope you enjoy your time here :)

Fish lobs in the weirpool at the top of that stretch - some big perch to be had! As for the size of the chub a 12inch chub would be around a pound and a 9 inch roach around ½lb. As for the other fish - may well have been a dace - some do take some colour and look similar to roach. Highly unlikely to have been a rudd from that stretch....

That is one lovely Pike.

Maybe we should have a fishin at Barton Court. Should be something for everyone, big perch, big roach, big pike and trout! Does anyone know if the grayling fishing has improved?

I used to fish that stretch in the 80's you have just brought back so great memories for me,

I used to trot bread flake and feed mashed bread, great roach fishing with the odd trout turning up, also chub and dace

I have also fish the lamborne which is a very small river that runs Thur or very close to Newbury, now I had some great grayling fishing there. O the memories!!
