Realistically, what sort of fines or other punishment are the driver and the would-be importer facing for this? Beyond the loss of the fish, that is.

Unfortunately not enough to stop them trying again. I think they normally get a few thousand pounds fine but I can't recall if vehicles can also be seized and destroyed - if they can I don't recall ever seeing such a punishment (?). Out of interest court outcomes are published on the environment agencies website, with full names and details.

Its a shame they killed the carp.

The could have sold them to lakes in france!! I am sure some places would love to get there hands on some of them and cheap prices and HM Customs could have made some money out of it, to put into a sheme to stop fish smuggling!

Martin there are so many carp in France that some years you cant give them away (litteraly!) First year we got good money for ours, second year we had to swap them for a ride on mower! third year we just didnt bother as who needs two mowers!!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

That applies to pasties but not to carp over 6 kilo's or so. Small 1 or 2 year carp are of little commercial value and if bought at all will fetch only about 1-2 euro's per kilo.
