JW project M avon quiver rod

Anyone got / tried the above rod? any good?

I'm looking for an all-round rod for my 8 year old, who wants to graduate from whip fishing to a proper rod n reel this spring, seems to be a decent rod at a not to expensive price, and the twin tip style rod will give him a chance to try some ledgering as well as float fishing.

Venues I have in mind for him to learn hold tench 3-5lb, bream and small carp - along with silverfish

Guess I'd better hide my centrepins from him, he'll be wanting one of those next!! :)

Can't speak for the project M but price wise it comes in significantly cheaper than the system version which is probably a clue as to what you are liable to get.

What I can wholeheartedly recommend is the Grauvlle 11' 3" specialist its a super bit of kit with a sweet through action and a nice slim handle and is more than capable of stopping most fish I have had barbel over 8 lb on mine.

The best deal for these rods at present is Bennets of Mountsorrel who will do you one for £ 60 including postage!

No I'm not connected to either of these companies either.

holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd

Hi Mat,

I've been using one since last summer, on practically every fishing trip and have no complaints with it. It's easily handled carp up to 12lbs. For a budget rod, I think it's excellent value for money. I'm no expert when it comes to rods, but it suits me.

The Grauvelle rod that Alan mentioned, however, is a much nicer piece of kit! I've used one a couple of times, and it's a real pleasure to handle.

£60 is a little more than I'm likely to be able to get past the wife for a "Kids" rod! but I might just have one of those Gravell rods for myself at somepoint :)

Thanks Janet, nice to hear you like it!

Mat,

I haven't really got the best out of it yet, but I have used it on both rivers and stillwaters and have had several nice chub, an almost PB perch, some decent roach, a carp on a mission and several suicidal brownies with it. I'm no expert on rods, as I'm still very much a beginner, so I don't know the correct terms to use, but all I can say is that it feels nice and does the job. You can't really ask for much more. I just know when I use it that I'm confident, and it works. I've had other rods that I just didn't like, and ended up selling. Us newbies can be real tackle tarts!

Apart from a few river trips, I've been mainly using it as a makeshift float rod on my new water where I've had tench, roach, rudd, bream and several unexpected carp that put a severe bend in it! It's the only rod in my price bracket that had a short enough butt to be comfortable for me to use, which may also be a problem for your son. I'm waiting for the new Shimano's to arrive in the shops in March, as I hear they have shorter butts, with adjustable weights to help in getting the right balance.

When I first started fishing, less than two years ago, my local tackle shop sold me a Zebco feeder rod and reel as a package for less than £30. I've since replaced the reel with a couple of nice little Shimano's, but that rod is still my favourite. It copes with just about anything! I went for a day's fishing with Martin James not long after I started, and felt a little cheap bringing along this very basic rod for our session, but he declared it to be perfectly adequate, and surprisingly good value for money.

You don't need to spend a fortune or have a brand name to have fun!

Mat ,take a look at wayahead tackles Academy range specifically designed for yougsters .theres a all round 10ft float rod and a 10ft feeder rod as well as a lighter float rod & a rather nce specimum rod (2.5lb tc) which would make a great stalking rod and all keenley priced .

and dragoncarp do some nce rods suitable for youngsters in the Argenta range ,the 10ft waggler is better suited to heavier float work or can handle being used as a specimen rod (I use one as a light stalking rod) and are a very strong rod. there's both 10ft & 12ft models of feeder & waggler rods and a twin tip barbel rod of 11ft all again at reasonable prices. They do some nice reels as well the Zircon Power Match Reel (with fighting drag aka shimano type lever) and the great Aquila 300 MatchCarp Reel ,this is a really smooth reel and a good size for smaller hands ( i have one of these ,brilliant little reel) .
