English Perch...Redfin

Recommended Posts

Watched a tv fishing docco by Lee Raynor, Rex Hunt's son in law. In the show, Lee was fishing Lake Fryans in Victoria for redfin. He made many casts, constantly changing lures and ended up with these three reddies

Any guesstimates on their sizes?

Perch are the most difficult species to guess from pics so I won't try the first two but the third must be from his finger tips to his elbow long, getting on for 18 inches I reckon so I'll have a stab at 4lbs 12oz

It's never a 'six', let's put it back

Chuck another Redfin on the barby?

Not at all. He put them in the boat's live well until the filming was completed then released the fish at the boat ramp.

This is the 'old' Fishing Gazette Length/Weight table for perch which I have found to be 'reasonably accurate' (give or take a few ounces) for normally proportioned fish...

Perch
9 - 0lb 12oz
10 - 0lb 13¼oz
11 - 0lb 14¾oz
12 - 1lb 0oz
13 - 1lb 4¼oz
14 - 1lb 9¾oz
15 - 1lb 14½oz
16 - 2lb 5½oz
17 - 2lb 13¼oz
18 - 3lb 5½oz
19 - 3lb 15¼oz
20 - 4lb 9½oz
21 - 5lb 5¼oz

Are they not treated as an invasive alien species then?

That is a good question. Most Australian fishos really hate the carp, maybe due to their mudsucking tendencies, however, they look upon the redfin as a worthy fish to tangle with. Can honestly say that I have never heard any fisho hating the reddies.

Must upgrade this...Watched another show by Lee Raynor, this one was in South Australia. He was invited to fish the Adelaide Hills area for redfin and his host said that the law was not to return the redfin as they are considered vermin. Well, South Aus is only there to keep WA and Victoria apart...

I lived in NSW and there was no law regarding returning redfin. No idea regards Tasmania, nor Western Australia. Don't know of any redfin in Queensland.
