we have quite a few around here i know of 3 hotspots with a few hundred yards ,nice laid back critters unlike wasps ,wood wasps are also far more laid back as well.

plenty of bees as well especially solitary bees and the usual masonry ones ,we had a bumble bee nest in the nearest bird box and one has been recurring in the shed roof for a few years since we took the asbestos off insulated it and put more modern sheeting on ,the only downside is wasps keep killing them in the roof but they either have the actual nest well hidden or its just a place bees like so queens looking about like it

Maybe a hornet.

They seem to be getting more common every year.

see: http://www.nhm.ac.uk/about-us/news/2007/may/news_11635.html

it resembled mostly the middle one in that picture though slighty fatter and brighter in yellow

I've found and killed four queen wasps in the house this winter. Because of bathroom and central heating renewals I have been rummaging and cleaning in odd corners, lofts and cupboards rather more than usual, else I might not have found so many. We tend to get wasps' nests in the loft about three years out of ten - that comes with a fifty-year-old house.

...and re hornets - they used to be common in the Battle area, but last year was the first time I've seen them at Crowborough.

Would be unusual as far north as Glasgow, though?
I haven't done any research, but I was brought up in Loch Lomondside and I never heard of them or saw them, but that does not prove they were not there. I remember when I was about 7 years old seeing a woodwasp. I thought it was an alien, nearly pooped me pants ;)

Back on topic, I work in St James' Hospital in Portsmouth, and we had a queen of the wasp variety in the office a few weeks ago.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.
