The last fish of the season

I was taken to a little river by a friend on the 14th, still consumed by chub fever. He'd had some huge fish this winter from there and had kindly offered to take me along to try for an end of season chub. The conditions were really good - overcast with a bit of drizzle, mild and calm, and the river had a lovely tinge of colour. He'd already baited up some swims with bread mash before I arrived, so we wandered up to the top of the stretch and settled into the first couple of swims. The river looked really chubby - a gentle flow, flat water and lots of overhanging trees and brambles :)

Nothing happened in the first swims so an hour later we moved down to the next. In this one I had some very fast taps which removed the bread from the hook, so I rebaited and fluked a great cast right next to the snag at the end of the swim. Within a couple of minutes there was a tap-tap and the tip slowly pulled right round - here we go! It was clearly a big chub, it was really heavy. I daren't let it get up any steam and make it to the snags so I really bent into it - it came to the surface with a huge boil and a great big brassy flash and the hook pinged out :o

Not happy!

In the next swim I lost two rigs in snags, and missed an unmissable bite on cheesepaste, and was starting to think that today may not be my day  Everything was bang on, for once, and I'm fluffing every chance I get! Ah well, time for another swim.

Chris had also missed a good bite, but nothing else happened from those swims, so we moved to another stretch downstream for dusk. Within 5 minutes of settling into our new swims I heard a splash and saw Chris playing a fish -huzzah! He netted it as I arrived, and what a mint chub it was. Somewhere between 4 and 5 pounds, and not a mark on it, absolutely pristine, probably never been caught before. In a moment of madness (and/or generosity!) Chris insisted ( ) that I have the next cast in his swim in case there was another fish or two still there, and I was happy to oblige. It was the last day of the season, after all! So I swung out my lump of flake into the flow and let it settle into the near-bank slack.

While chatting, in one of those classic moments of fishing timing, I turned around to say something at the exact moment my tip banged over - thankfully I didn't miss the bite and struck into a chub which felt quite heavy as it plodded about in the flow. Taking it steady in case I lost another one, I carefully brought it upstream and into the net. It looked quite big...! I haven't really caught any big chub so I'm no good at guessing weights, and Chris was being tactfully ambiguous, but on his digi scales it settled on 5lb 1oz - a new pb and the final fish of the season.

Thanks Chris!

Great finish to the season Anderoo and a PB to boot, Congratulations.

Fishing seems to be my favorite form of loafing.

I know the joy of fishes in the river through my own joy, as I go walking along the same river.

What do you think if the float does not dip, try again I think.

Thanks! It was hardly an angling masterclass though - someone else's swim and not even looking

It was a strange feeling - very, very happy, a little dazed, and all tinged with the sadness of the last day. Quite strange.

Good to see you posting again Steve, I thought you'd popped over to Wingham a few weeks back and forgot to go home... :)

No such luck! Been away, plus very busy house hunting as we've accepted an offer on our own home. Fingers crossed it doesn't all fall though!

Nice one...

Reminds me of days when I was a lad chub fishing....

Big lump of cheese on the hook and the rod resting over a barbed wire fence!

Getting in to all sorts of trouble trying to land the fish!!!

Glory days!!!!

:D

You are such a fawning little git. :D Sod the who's swim was it anyway. You did it, you hook it, you landed it, you photographed it and you posted it on here, take the adulation and smile without excuse. :o:D:lol::sun::clap2::clap::thumbs: That's enough.

Did the sale of your house include the lakes. :D Edited by medwaygreen
