  1. and of course silent and less anti social!!!!! Quiver tip every time for me...that wrap around bite is so exhilarating !!!!!
  2. It seems a bit sad to me... someone is getting off their backside and making a new fishing programme, yet some folk are willing to try to "diss" it before it even reaches the screen (in whatever format) I too worked in TV for years (though don't anymore) and still work in the media profession... but I don't see this as a valid reason to put myself forward as an "expert" or critic...after all I have been married most of my adult life, and I am still not very knowledgeable about that !!!!
  3. As a matter of interest...does anyone ever ledger in Canals? I have never tried it...but the thought of watching a really light quiver tip sounds like fun!!! If so how would you approach it ?
  4. To echo all the other replies...just do what YOU want!!! I am a newbie/returnee...all I do is float and ledger/feeder fish..and I love it!! and if I don't catch "specimen" fish...so what! I've usually had a great day in lovely surroundings, I'm out of the house, away from work...Bliss !!!!!! Happy days & tight lines!!!!
  5. Nice one... Reminds me of days when I was a lad chub fishing.... Big lump of cheese on the hook and the rod resting over a barbed wire fence! Getting in to all sorts of trouble trying to land the fish!!! Glory days!!!!
  6. Why is it that most Angling TV presenters tend to wear quite bright colours when fishing? If cammo was that important surely they'd all be poncing around on our screens wearing it ?
  7. Perhaps anyone who buys one...should have their fishing license revoked!!!!!!!!!!!!
  8. Went out yesterday for about 4 hours to local pool…. Caught 5 small ‘uns!!!! …1 Roach and 4 Rudd.. All caught on double maggot using feeder….I just love watching the quiver tip bend round!!! (Also tried bread, luncheon meat and worm, but no luck!) You may wonder why this bears a posting….well …of the past 4 outings…3 blanked and 1 with 1 fish…so I am really chuffed!!!! Think I might go out again on Sunday!!!!! Sorry to have bored you all with this!!!!!! :D :D
  9. What a great topic!!!! Everything you folks have written sounds good to me...even the sitting for hours by a couple of carp rods (which I don't do !) Fishing is about so much more than the act of catching a fish or two ! The natural history side of our pass time is hugely important to most of us it seems . There are hoards of folks who will never see or experience the world as we do ! Hats off to anglers! (OK perhaps hats on in this weather...but you know what I mean!!!!!)
  10. Nice one Janet...as always !!!! I really enjoy reading your reports.... I am hoping to give blanking a go myself this week if I can sneak off work...and if the snow doesn't come down!!!!! Will let you know!!!!!
  11. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions! I am always willing to learn!!!!!
  12. Have any of you hair rigged sweetcorn? Is it good for ledger/feeder fishing? How many should I put on the hair etc!I presume when float fishing you put it/them straight onto the hook ? Also while I am about it!!!! Why is it that some baits like bread, which work like a dream in the warmer months, don't do so well in the winter it seems? I know I am a bit of a fishing numpty....but any help gratefully received as usual!!! Cheers!!!!
  13. Cheers Janet!!!!! I am looking forward to your next report from your new fishing pond!!! Have you been practicing putting up the chair!!?!!?!?!! Happy Days! (Can't wait to retire, like you !!!!!!!)
  14. Took a day off work yesterday (Friday) and had 5 hours at my local commercial!!! and.... I blanked...just 2 or 3 touches, not one "proper" developed bite! A couple of chaps further round the pool caught...but I didn't and neither did the 2 blokes next to me (one of who it turns out owns a local fishing tackle shop...so that made me feel better!!!) However, the real reason I am writing this is to say how much I enjoyed my day out, no doubt catching one or two of the critters would have been nice...but...I had a great day, my new warm weather gear kept me toasty warm...fishing in my books really is so much more than hoiking fish out of a puddle!!!!! The sign of a true angler must be coming in from blanking and still grinning!!! Cant wait to go again!!!! Happy days!!!!
  15. Thanks Boldbear...that looks just the job!
  16. I have been making some end lines with hook /hair and swivel...what do you recommend (that is cheap!) for safely storing this sort of thing in my fishing bag? Cheers
  17. Iffy territory here methinks... I would hope that most anglers care very much about the fish they catch, what condition it is in, allowing it recovery time when returning it etc. Caringshould be strong point in the sport...not regarded as a weakness (i.e if you care so much...don't go fishing!") Just a thought!!!!
  18. My condolences on your loss MdgFishing... I am sure all your great memories of Mel, will help a little bit, in the years to come.
  19. I used live bait once when I was a lad and caught a 7lb pike...I am now ashamed to say I took it home to show my mum. When I was a kid I used to shoot with an air rifle almost anything that moved...then graduated to a shot gun for rabbits and pigeons... I now would not fish with a live bait or kill a fish for "fun" & I would not shoot any bird (though I have been known to dispatch the occasional rat!) I don't think any of us are ever entirely consistent ! What I am trying to say is that we all have our opinions on what is acceptable and what is not...but really they are just that....opinions Without debate nothing will ever change...so bring it on... I must say that I for one (with the exception of the occasional personal comment) have found this thread interesting and entertaining.... Thank you !!!!!
  20. Paul....are you seriously suggesting it is WRONG to feel guilty about foul hooking a fish...I certainly have, it is never my intent to foul hook so when I do, I feel very sorry and yes a bit guilty about it !!!However, back to the thread!!! IMO Live baiting is up to the conscience of the individual.... It takes all sorts to make our sport what it is...I personally can think of little more tedious than sitting behind a pole the length of a cricket pitch in furious competition with the people either side of me... BUT that is their prerogative, as is live baiting ...or being like me, a fairly inept angler who is content to sit by the water now and again, daydreaming and catching the occasional gullible fish!!!!!! Happy days!!!!!
  21. found this chat about Huntingdon Racecourse fishing!!! (just do a google serch!) dunno if it is any good to you! Cheers!!! http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/Monks-Pit-t67902.html
  22. Smashing read Dant... Somewhere deep in my soul...I suspect that to me, in a masochistic sort of way, loosing a fish is almost as exciting as landing one... sometimes I think it does us good to be beaten in battle....surely better than having the fish climbing up the line and surrendering into the landing net !!!!!!!!! Great story...let us know when you land the monster!!! Tight lines!
  23. Cica 1974 can't remember what fish it was!!!!
  24. I think (and hope) today's young generation will look back on most of their fishing with fond memories... although I am not into match angling or "bagging up" on as many fish as possible in overstocked puddles, this is often the way it is now...each to their own I think perhaps every generation regards it's own younger years as "halcyon days" As long as we are enjoying angling...any age, any type, then that's "as good as it gets" !!!!!! Much of the poaching I did as a young country lad, would be frowned upon by purists..but they were some of my fondest fishing memories!!!!!! However, I have to add, in haste, that we poached "for the pot" !!! I do hope though, that some of the new memories being formed will include "blank" days, but seeing the kingfisher or grebes or just lying back and watching a few whipsy clouds scudding across the blue skies in the summer....Whoops I've started waxing lyrical...I had better take me pills and lie down in a darkened room and wait for matron!!!!!!!!! Hey Ho !!!!!!!
