Help, I've just bought a pole.

OK I didn't mean to. I was browsing on fleabay and just got carried away.

Pole fishing is not big up here but there is a new coarse fishery down the road stccked with the usual suspects and I had that in mind when I bought it.

I just wanted a taster really so it is just an 8m cheapy, but now I am faced with a bewildering array of rollers, roosts, pots, rigs and elastication kits. I don't even know what most of them are.

Anyone know where I can find a copy of "Pole fishing for dummies" :)

Seriously, what basic kit do I need to go with my new purchase.

Bloomin heck Dave! first the Mk5 and now a pole! your next move would be best to be down south! We will have to do a house swap so you can use your new coarse gear and I can dust of my salmon rod!

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

If I move down there I will have to buy a fishing license :o If you fancy dusting off your salmon gear, give me a shout, you could show me how to catch Pike whilst your at it ;)

Apparently it has a No. 8 elastication kit with it. If only I knew what that meant :D

The trout fishing is fine and I'm still having great fun on the float tube, but I am returning to my roots with the coarse fishing.

As they say, you can take the boy out of Essex etc. ;)

I got a cheapie pole a few months ago as I wanted to try pole fishing without spending a fortune, my first couple of outings were hard work the pole was heavy and unbalanced ( you get what you pay for), the more you get out the easier it gets, now I use the pole all the time with a fair amount of confidence.

My advice would be to try a few short sessions and build up from there, the guys on this forum will give you all the help and advice you need, also take a look at some you tube vids.

Good luck

The various elastication ratings has been described before on this forum a quick search and you'll get the idea.

If it has only one kit I assume it one has only one 'top section' to elasticate. Some poles come with either addition top sections or that you can purchase as extras and its generally advised to have 2 - 3 differently elasticated tops depending on the size of fish in the water. I think 8 is nearer the sliver fish end.

Theres plenty of guides on how to elasticate your pole.

No need for rollers and all that silly muck. 8m line to hand is great fun in running water.

Actually it can also be devastating in the right conditions and I've won a few matches with it.

It might be easier to start with a standard pole rig though :D
