This is true, they are great sort 'off the top'' , and even better when not spawning, most carp are in the process of spawning at the moment, many decide not to target them.

You keep saying this my old friend, but as far as I'm concerned, all fish are 'sporting fish', if you tackle them with appropriate gear.

 

As to having a "chance to catch" them, the chance of hooking one has increased at least a thousand fold over the last 20/30 odd years, and that's the main problem. It used to be a major challenge, now, unless you go looking for a challenging water, or fish in bad conditions, then the major challenge is to avoid catching one.

Nice one Rudd, might give it a bash today but way too many ducks, coots, and moorhens to be trying surface fishing

 

again this year I havnt been very active with my angling but have managed a couple of half arsed attempts on a small pond near to me and winkled out a 9lb common on a most basic float rig and sweetcorn.

TBH my own angling adventures are few and far between these days.

Only been ten times this year with five blank sessions, the last of these in a pond full of fish in perfect weather conditions - or so I thought, they were not having it and it was not just me on a short evening session, two other members had been fishing for thirteen hours without a sniff - that's fishing!

Ive been looking forward to this time of year for tench and roach since all through winter, done no pike fishing at all through winter apart from once with the lure rod for 10 minutes (braid and guids freezing up shut ) I just cant get the finger out.
