Crabs and Lobsters

I was thinking of this only the other week, does anyone have the spec for a cheap diy pot? I looked at some colapsable ones while on hol in the med but they were too small for our big crabs. I dont use pots for spider crabs, just a snorkle and mask!

There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore like an idiot!

I seem to remember that a good area from lobsters down our way is off Selsey (around 'The Hounds' I think).

Might be worth a crack if you're off down there smut chasing - although you probably wouldn't want a smut going tearing around the potline

Cheers

The nets arrived so I'll be making it up tomorrow. Time allowing, I'll be dropping it on the Hounds while I'm after bream again on Sunday!

Dan - have a look at ones the commercial boys use and copy them (which is what I am doing), or look on the web and copy the metal mesh ones they use in the US. Mine is to be made thus: A slatted hardwood base about 50cm x 75cm; four semicircle hoops (salvaged) made of about 2cm dia polythene, probably heat bent, three slats horizontally along the hoops to strengthen the top, covered in net (not forgetting an access door) and two netting funnels tied in so the critters can get in not out. There seems to be plenty of different designs in use but all on the same principle.

Cheers Yakity, but bet you cant pull a pot up from from your yak!

probably true. however i think a lot of the US guys use hoop nets instead. much lighter and just as efficient if you are on hand.

I hold the record on this one ......

nearly slack water off Selsey .....

float fishing for bream in a Hayling Island Club boat match ....... groundbaiting with cat-food/bran/boiled rice mixture (No.43 on the menu) ....... float slid away ......

a couple of tail thumps ......

2 lbs lobster .....

there you are ......

Reminds me of another one ......

slack water again .....

HIAC match .... nice 'smut' on .......

mee mate's boat drifts (swinging on the slack) past our stern and my trace/fish is caught around his lazy anchor rope.

Broke off!

Come the end of the match, Dave W. pulls up his anchor together with my trace and 9lbs smut attached .....

promised to return mee trace (nope! 10 years after)

smut not eligible .......

Pal of mine suggested trying a pot from the shore. The spot I was thinking of drops into the abyss at your feet,Any tips for a total lobster pot virgin? I have never seen a commercial pot in the area so I suppose the potential is terrific!

Crabs - you swine Snatcher :)
