According to QI the Turkeys enjoyed by the Pilgrim Fathers were Norfolk Whites brought with them from England, not the native american birds, talk about coals to Newcastle.

I doubt they had any idea what was available in the great unknown.

Just back to our hotel room. Ate with one of my offspring and his family and his wife's family.

We brought a ham, a pork loin (for tomorrow) and a pecan pie. The inlaws brought several dishes. DIL cooked a turkey. All 9 of us ate too much and enjoyed it immensly.

We are here (Haymarket, Virginia) until Sunday when we head home (7 hour drive) via Roanoak, Virginia where we plan to have lunch with friends.

Tony - one of the key ingredients, Karo syrup (a corn syrup with a very distinctive flavour), is not available over there as far as I can tell nor can I find anything similar you could substitute.

It is sorta like trying to locate a substitute for Marmite/Vegemite.

**********************************

1 c Karo corn syrup - use light or dark according to taste

3 ea Eggs, lightly beaten

1 c Sugar

1 tsp Vanilla Extract

2 tbsp butter or margarine, melted

1 1/2 c Pecan halves

1 ea 9″ unbaked pie shell

In a large bowl, stir first 5 ingredients until well blended.

Pour into pie shell.

Cover top with pecans.

Bake in 350 degree oven 50 to 55 minutes.

Check by pressing lightly on the top. It should spring back.

Allow to cool.

Thanks for that there is a specialist American grocers in London I might be able to pick the syrup up from them I have got some obscure Cajun stuff from them in the past so I am sure they can help out.

If so you should be good to go.

Pecan pie has been my favourite since I was a lad.
