News Release From Warlingham & District AS

Warlingham & District AS are proud to announce, along with main sponsors Dulley Ceilings and Partitions, that they are to dedicate this year’s Lower Thames Championships in memory of David Bird, who sadly died last week.

With the blessing of his widow Maggi, the band Stoney’s Friends will be playing live after the match in order to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Care, a charity that David Bird was associated with.

“David Bird was my inspiration to start running open matches in the late 70s and then getting good sponsors such as Trumans, Greene King and now of course Dulley Ceilings and Partitions, so the least we could do is remember him for his great work for angling and anglers these past 30 + years,” said organiser Dave Harper.

“I am also so grateful to Keith Arthur, Ruth Lockwood and fellow band members Roy, Nigel and Glyn for giving up their time to provide a fund raising gig,” he added.

Although attempts were made to try and boost the prize money, with the introduction of a “golden peg” with a five figure bounty, only William Hill bothered to reply and offered a £100 “free bet” for the winning angler to place at the 2011 Fish ‘O’ Mania Final.

There are still tickets left for the event that cost £25 each, cheques being made payable to Warlingham DAS. Postal applications, enclosing a SAE should be made to Dave Harper, 27 Queen’s Court, Kempton Walk, Croydon, Surrey CR0 7XG.
