The first of 21 Heats in the Lexus European Fly-fishing Championships 2009 kicked off at Llyn Llandegfedd Reservoir in South Wales on Sunday 5th April, 2009.

Overnight frost forced many high achieving anglers to fish deep and Welsh International angler, Craig Gimblett prised out his 6 fish limit within the 90 minutes fishing a fast sinking line with Boobies and mini lures.

Euro Fly Fishing ChampionshipsMost of the competitors failed to get deep enough and Gimblett took the top prize of a coveted Hardy EWS Soft Shell Jacket plus a £100 voucher.

Runner-up was another Welsh International angler, David Hoppe, who started on nymphs, but after only landing 1 fish in the first 3 hours, switched to a sinking line to take his limit bag by 4pm.

Hardy & Greys Ltd Consultant and Championship Manager, John Horsey said;

“The sharp overnight frost really stopped the trout from feeding until after midday.  Craig Gimblett’s gamble to fish very deep certainly paid off and on a hard day, his International pedigree certainly came to the fore”.
