The trout lake has been fishing superbly with Paddy McLouglin from Rory’s Fishing Tackle Shop catching in excess of 20 trout today (Wednesday Aug 1st). Our Italian friends, Pepe, Luca and Sami brought their dad fishing whilst on holidays from Italy and he caught 7 trout. The Italian lads themselves caught very well too.

The lakes are very busy at the moment and everyone who comes to fish is having great success.

We are now taking bookings for the winter season with various Youth Groups, Schools and Transition Year groups.

Last week saw the Boyne drop a little but not enough to allow good trout fishing, luckily the tributaries gave some sport as one Gary Foley found out from Dublin. A distance caster of note however he had to adjust his set to catch the browns on a dry fly on the smaller river. Sedges were the order of the day and despite some heavy showers Gary caught and released a good number of 12 to 14 inch fish.  His exploits to catch pike on the fly were not as successful, moving many, hooking 3 and boating none, fortunately his boating partner landed 5. On occasions like these pike in warmer water can lunge at lures and not take, the bright day was not a help. Just like fly fishing for trout we changed size and indeed fly but to no avail.
Erik Lofting from Australia thought he might have a go at some Lough fishing for trout, more at home on the beach and sea he took to fly fishing very quickly. After some casting instruction and an introduction to the XP 6100 Erik captured one very nice trout, as this was his sole intention he rested on his laurels for the remainder of the day and told stories and listened to a few.

On the Blackwater Lodge beats, the fishing has been very good. 45 grilse and salmon to 12½ lb have been taken since July 24th.  There have been very few anglers out fishing, but those who have been out have been enjoying good sport. The river rose in a small dirty flood over the end of the month which spoilt fishing for a day or so, but it was well back in order on the 1st. August, when I went out myself & had four fish on fly in an hour – best a slightly coloured 10 pounder, & the others all with long-tailed sea lice & about 5, 8 & 9 lb. All were returned alive.  There is a lot of fish running at the moment, and the prospects of sport in the coming weeks are extremely good. The river is holding a lovely fly height & the clarity has improved rapidly since the last flood.
Best Regards & Tight Lines!

From Eureka Lodge, Caherdaniel, angling guide Vincent Appleby reports on the past week’s fishing trends on the LOUGH CURRANE system:

Email: salmonandseatrout@eircom.net
Website: http://www.salmonandseatrout.com/
23/7/07 Mr Shay Lynham was in excellent form again with his fly rod when he caught himself a fine 9 lbs./4.09kgs Salmon and added four Sea Trout to his basket and as usual Mr Shay Lynham was with his Gillie Mr Mike O’Dwyer, also in good form was Mr Martin Lanigan O’Keefe when he caught himself a Grilse on the fly with his Gillie Mr Dominic Mc Gillicudy. On the Sea Trout front just the odd one or two caught. Wind NNE fresh to strong, bright and sunny all day, humidity 75%
24/7/07 The Sea Trout were on the slack side even though there were a few Juniors caught. On the Salmon front, Judy Sutton, caught her first ever Salmon on the fly in the Mouth of the Commeragh so congratulations to Judy and lets hope it is the first of many and just for the record Judy was with her Gillie Mr Dominic Mc Gillicudy. Wind SW light to calm, but by 12 pm, it was light to fresh and as the day went on, the rain started to bucket down and the wind got st
ronger and it got quite nasty around 5.30pm. Air temperature 17C/62F humidity 71%
25/7/07 there were not many boats fishing this morning due to a strong SW wind, but come midday the wind had dropped sufficiently that one could pontificate on our great water, there were a few Sea Trout caught but no real rod benders, but it was a different story in the Salmon department, where Mr Martin Lanigan O’Keefe caught a Grilse on the fly in the Mouth of the Commeragh with his Gillie Mr Dominic Mc Gillicudy. Now for the catch of the day on the upper Lakes, Mr Peter Wills of the UK fishing with his good friend Mr Ken Toner of Waterville and the UK caught four Sea Trout of class and their weights are as follows 3.5 lbs/1.59 kgs, 2.5 lbs/1.14 kgs, 2 lbs/0.91 kgs, 2 lbs./0.91 kgs some catch and all caught on the fly and Ken was telling me that was Peters best ever catch on Lough Cloonaghlin.  Weather – heavy showers throughout the day. Max air temperature 19C/60F humidity 57% amount of rain fall 3.8mm/0.149606in.
26/7/07 It was a wild day on Lough Currane but that didn’t deter we Anglers from going out, first to the Sea Trout department, Dr Hobart of Germany fishing out of Lakelands.Com caught three Sea Trout in the 2 lbs/0/91 kgs class but Angler of the day, is Mr Thomson who caught one Grilse and three Sea Trout of which the biggest weighed in at 2.5 lbs/1.14kgs all caught on the fly, with his Gillie Mr Frank Donnelly and the Commander-in-Chief of www.lakelandshouse.com and on the famous Butler Pool this afternoon Mr Gerard Roe, caught a 5 lbs./2.27 kgs Grilse on the fly and his Gillie Mr Dominic Mc Gillicudy was telling me that they contacted a few more. Wind veered between WNW to W strong all day and at times it was quite nasty. Air temperature 65F/18.C humidity 76% water temperature on the Bank of the Church 18.6C/65F cloudy but there was plenty of sun breaking through. Amount of rain fall 3.9mm/0.153543in.
27/7/07 There were a few Sea Trout caught on the drift and on the troll and our Manager Mr John Murphy and of www.loughcurrane.com reported to me that he and his client rose a few Juniors this morning. In the Salmon/Grilse department Mr Noel Foley fishing with his Gillie Mr Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com caught a Grilse of 4.5lbs/2.05kgs and added five Juniors to his basket. Wind WSW light to fresh with bright sunshine all day. Air temperature 19C/66F, Humidity 64% amount of rain fall 0.1mm/0.003937in.
28/7/07 Margery Homes caught a Grilse and a Sea Trout with her Gillie Mr Mike O’Dwyer and Mr Noel Foley, fishing with his Gillie Mr Frank Donnelly of Lakeland house.Com caught a fine Grilse of 5.5 lbs/2.5 kgs and also caught a fine Sea Trout of 3.5 lbs/1.59 kgs. On the Famous Butler Pool there was a fine 9 lbs/4.09 kgs Salmon caught on the fly by an English angler. Back on Lough Currane there were a few Juniors caught. Wind SW light, with rain and heavy at times but had gone through by 2pm. Air temperature 16C/60F humidity 87% amount of rain fall 6.4mm/0.251968in.
29/7/07 There was blazing sunshine all day even though there were a few Juniors caught but no real rod benders and the same goes for the Salmon/Grilse department but I see www.loughcurrane.com is reporting that the famous Butler Pool is producing Salmon every day and there is no argument to that. Wind N light to fresh, air temperature 18C/64.4F, humidity 56%. That is all the news from your Gillie and the Waterville fishery. No Spin no fly’s just Facts.

RIVER LEE
The best run of fish seen on the lee since 1975 with all anglers catching fish with the majority of these being fin clipped.

LAUNE ANGLERS WATERS AND BEAT 3

Water level has fallen but still very suitable for fly and spinning.

A much better week I know of five fish for the week from Laune Anglers waters, mostly over the weekend when angling effort was high.

The slight fall in water seems to have facilitated better fishing

This writer at last met a fish a small grilse but lost it.

Fish were observed rising but elusive and difficult to catch. Catch of the week went to Matt Foley. He had one fish of 3.5 lbs caught on the River Suck in the Ballymoe area. He had another fish of 2.75 lbs. on a Deer hair sedge.

DANIEL BOY….
We got a cracking photo this week sent in of young Daniel Shaw of Collage Vale Mullingar. Young Daniel is really keeping the Shaw angling tradition on line. Daniel was fishing with dad Nickie on Lough Owel, where he landed some fine trout and a few good Perch. Here we have Daniel pictured with one of his cracking trout from Owel. I was in with Nickie last week in Shaws hardware and he has a splendid selection of outdoor clothing. There is that much camouflage clothing around at present, the fish can’t see us out on the lake.
OWEL COMPETITIONS….
Tonight Wednesday 1st August Lough Owel trout preservation Association will host the Dan Mullally Trophy. This fly fishing competition will be fished from 7pm-11pm. It’s a club competition and new members are more than welcome on the night. The weigh-in of the Dan Mullally will take place at Mullallys and the all fish weighed in must be over the 13 inch limit for club competitions. Plus a four fish limit is in place. The lake has being stocked recently with some top quality brown trout and these fish should provide some rod bending action in the coming weeks. On August 12th the club will host the Patti Doolan Perpetual Shield.  More on this in the coming weeks.
GLORE- ALL SPECIES…..
Lough Glore anglers are holding their all- species competitions. Sponsored by Castlepollard Angling centre, this event should draw quite a few anglers. On the membership card the venue is the Inny River. This may change before the competition morning as the River is quite high and very overgrown with weeds in some stretches. The competition is next Sunday August 5th and fishing is from 9am-4-30pm. Please check with Castlepollard Angling Centre before travelling Sunday morning Mob: 086-3686146.

THE JOHN MORAN MEMORIAL CUP….
The August Bank Holiday weekend is reserved every year for one of the largest Trout competitions of the season, the John Moran Memorial Cup, which is run and sponsored by Ganly’s Homevalue Hardware and also the Ganly, Monaghan and Doherty families. This will be the eighteenth year this competition has taken place and is held to remember John Moran who passed away so tragically on the lake. While the fishing competition is the main event there will also be plenty of other activities over the whole weekend to keep everybody busy.
The fishing competition, which will start at 10.30am on Sunday August 5th from Killeenmore Harbour, is open to members of invited clubs some of which are Athlone Anglers Association, Ballykeeran and Killeenmore Anglers, Camlin and District Anglers, Cashel Anglers Association, Coosan Anglers Association, Elan Angling Club, Lanesboro Pike Anglers, Portlick Anglers Association and Roscommon and District Anglers. While standard trout fishing rules apply and both fly and troll methods can be used please remember that there will be around two hundred anglers taking part which means that in all probability it will be a large fish which wins so please let the smaller ones back unharmed if possible. The competition finishes back at Killeenmore Harbour at 6.00pm where only ticket holders will be allowed to weigh in their fish. Tickets will be issued at the start of the competition by each clubs Captain of the Day which for the Athlone Anglers Association will be Angela Sloane, normal competition entry fees will apply and competitors may only start from Killeenmore Harbour. As there are so many clubs taking part please make sure and get there early as it is going to be extremely busy.  Apart from the main fishing competition on the Sunday there are also a number of other events taking place over the weekend starting on Saturday August 4th at 2 pm with the Children’s Fishing Competition followed by a barbeque. On Sunday if you don’t fancy going to the Lake for the fishing then there will be a fantastic Bingo session starting at 2.00pm and after the weigh in of the fishing competition there will be a barbeque followed by entertainment.  Monday has been designated as sports day with many events taking place for both the adults and the kids including the traditional Egg and Spoon Race, the Wheelbarrow Race, Football Competition plus many, many more events throughout the day and evening to keep everybody entertained.  The competition and all the other events are open to members and their immediate families of all the invited clubs and is one of the few occasion in the year when practically the entire local angling community get together to swap stories with old friends and renew acquaintances. All in all it promises to be a great weekend and our thanks to the Ganly, Monaghan and Doherty families for all their hard work and dedication in making this event so enjoyable for everyone and we look forward to seeing you all there.
LOUGH ACALLA CO GALWAY
It was another good angling week on Lough Acalla with prolific hatches of sedges. On average about 12 anglers per day fished the fishery with good results achieved. D Ward from Kilconnell had a 3 lbs. Brown trout on a Golden Olive.  K Dowd from Ballinasloe had a 2 lbs. Brown trout on a Peter Ross. The most successful flies were Golden Head olive, Peter Ross, Black Pennell and Muddlers.  Prospects look favourable for the coming week.

RIVER MULCAIR CO LIMERICK
Over the last week, lots of Salmon have been observed moving through the Mulcair and Castleconnell systems. With the presence of many anglers on the banks of the Mulcair, the salmon have proved elusive. For some anglers the week has proven to be very successful with local angler Dermot Darcy landing three fish in the long field area of the Mulcair, the best being a grilse of 8lbs. Water levels should be favourable this week for the fly angler as water levels drop back.  Anglers are reporting a good number of Salmon showing at Plassy on the Shannon.

Markus Muller reports:

River Moy

The Moy system produced a whopping 886 salmon for the week bringing the yearly total, so far, to 5173. Again, the middle and upper reaches of the river saw the best of the fishing while conditions on the Moy Fishery beats remained poor due to the high water levels.

The Ridge Pool accounted for 18 salmon for the week. Amongst the successful anglers were: Edward Kelly, Cavan, Paddy Conneff, Dublin, Michel Odin, France and Alan Jack, Northern Ireland. Alan also caught and released a remarkable 4.5 lbs. brown trout. The Ash Tree Beat produced 3 salmon for the week: Edward Kelly & P.J. Smith, both from Co. Cavan, and Jim Doody all had one salmon on spinner, while Steve Hazeldine, UK, landed a salmon on the Freshwater Beat.

The Mount Falcon Fishery noted its 3 record week in a row. Simon Wall and party of 3 anglers from the UK did particularly well catching 32 salmon for 4 days. Also on Mt. Falcon, Ian Forde, Dublin, caught 7 salmon (5 released) including his first ever salmon. On Coolcronan, eleven year old Nathan Clarke, UK, also landed his first ever salmon, while Phil Briscoe, UK, had 3 fish, with best at 6 lbs. On Armstrong’s, Christie Galvin, Offaly, had 2 salmon, so had Richard Robinson, UK, with best at 12.2 lbs. Kildare, had 3 on spinner and Ken Coleman, Co. Louth, landed two on the fly.

Moy Estuary

Despite the discolouration of the water the estuary enjoyed a reasonable week with 55 trout reported and many more returned. Colin & Sue North, UK, who were fishing with Judd Ruane caught 5 sea trout on mackerel strip and also enjoyed excellent sport on the fly.

Lough Conn

Again a quiet week on Lough Conn and few fish were caught. Twenty-five anglers took 36 trout over 40 rod days. However, at least some of the anglers that went out managed to catch fish.

Keith Elvery and his party of 4 UK anglers had 7 trout on Golden Olives and Green Peter patterns, with best at 2 lbs., Constance Browning & partner took 3 trout for 4 lbs., best at 1.75 lbs. on Daddy Longlegs, while Scottish angler, Peter Mansfield caught 2 fish for 2 lbs. during an evenings fishing. Elsewhere, junior angler, Steven Breen, Co. Clare, fishing with his father caught his first ever trout for 1.25 lbs. on an Olive Bumble.

Burrishoole Fishery

A total of 16 salmon (15 ranched & 1 wild) weighing 58.4 lbs. were reported for 55 rod days. The best fish of the week, a 5 lbs. grilse, was caught by John Chapman. Other notable catches included 3 grilse for angling journalist David Gray for his day on Burrishoole and the first ever salmon for visiting angler Dermot Seymore. Most successful flies for the week were Ally’s Cascade and Green Peter patterns.

Ballin Lough

Yet, another excellent week for the Ballin Lough Fishery with a total of 56 trout reported for 22 rods. Matt Fahy & friend, Islandeady, caught 2 rainbow trout, best at 3.5 lbs., Denis & Pat Murphy, Co. Lynsey Clarke reports:

RIVER DROWES – Monday 23rd to Sunday 29th July 2007.

The Drowes continued fishing well over the week with good numbers of grilse caught. The river dropped over the week to read 5.5 on the gauge at Four Masters Bridge which gave ideal conditions for the fly. With the big Spring Tides towards the weekend good salmon in the 8 to 10 lb range entered the fishery.
Given here are some of the recorded catches for the past week. Derek McLoughlin recorded 4 salmon caught from the Red Roof and the Mill pool on the fly. Alfred Vandew
alle accounted for 5 grilse ranging from 3 to 6 lb caught on the fly from the Mill Pool, Scot’s Corner and Island Pool. Alan Kendall recorded grilse of 3 & 5 lbs. caught from New Bridge and Sea Pool. Graham Cochrane caught 3 grilse weighing 3, 3 & & 4 lbs. from Lennox’s Bridge on spinner & worm. Colin Harrgan accounted for a 4 lbs. grilse caught from Briney’s on a Cascade shrimp fly. Anthony Carty landed a 4 lbs. fish on spinner from the Mill Pool.

LOUGH MELVIN – Monday 23rd to Sunday 29th July 2007.

The Lough fished very well for trout (especially sonaghan) at times this week. There were thundery spells which put the fish off, but overall, there were some good catches of sonaghan with anglers recording catches of 20 to 30 fish with many of these over 1 lb. I know one angler recorded 6 sonaghan for 7 lb and returned another 20. The deepwater out in the middle of the Lough seems to have provided the best fishing. With regard to successful flies, it was just a case of finding the fish; fly pattern seemed irrelevant with various patterns taking fish. The Lough seems to have been quiet for salmon.

EANY FISHERY – Monday 23rd to Sunday 29th July 2007.

The river was low for the most part this week but there was a good flood (0.92 metres) on Thursday and levels were excellent for the fly on Friday morning. The gauge average for the week read 0.35 metres and 25 visiting rods fished for the week. There were fair numbers of salmon caught for the week and all of the fish seem to have been caught from Thursday onwards.  Given here are some of the catches. On Thursday, John Wilson recorded 2 grilse caught in the morning from the Eanybeg. The fish weighed 4 & 6 lbs. Charley Fury accounted for 10 lbs. salmon caught from the Fish Counter Pools on a spinner. In the afternoon I caught a 4½ lbs. grilse from the Flag Pool on a Bann Special shrimp fly. On Friday, Phillip McMahon recorded 5 lbs. 12 oz grilse caught on the spinner below Burn’s falls. John McLaughlin recorded a 9 lbs. salmon caught on a Cascade fly from the Luggie’s losing 2 other salmon and rising a further 2. On Saturday, Alan Cully recorded a 5 lbs. grilse caught from Bonnyglen Falls on worm. We are also still catching numerous 5 & 6 lb Rainbow Trout! God help us if these start feeding on the salmon fry and parr! We have no bag limit for Rainbow Trout! Anglers are requested to kill any they catch.

OWENEA FISHERY – Monday 23rd to Sunday 29th July 2007.

The Owenea River ran at low summer levels all week except for a good flood on Thursday which raised the river to 0.45 metres on the gauge. This gave good conditions for Friday also but by Saturday the river was once again running very low. The gauge average for the week read 0.21 metres. 26 visiting rods fished for the week. There were a number of salmon recorded though catches were lower than we would expect at this point in the season. Brian Smith recorded a 3 lbs. grilse caught on Monday from beat 9 on the fly. On Thursday, William Forrester recorded 2 grilse caught from beat 5. The fish weighed 4 & 5 lbs. and were caught on a spinner. Peter Grahame accounted for a 5 lbs. grilse caught on beat 5 on the fly. On Friday, Davy Arbuckle recorded a 4 lbs. grilse caught on a spinner from beat 8.

ERNE ESTUARY July to August 2007.

The Erne Estuary is fishing extremely well with good numbers of sea trout being caught on all methods with a large proportion of these being large trout. Of course any over 40 cm have to be returned with the fishery closed for salmon and 40 cm plus sea trout. No doubt the cessation of the draught nets on the estuary has meant large numbers of sea trout have not been netted out this season. This certainly is the year to be fishing the estuary!

Lionel Knobbs, Loughs Agency Angling Manager reports:
Thu 2nd Aug 07

River Faughan
Water levels are low at the moment but I am still receiving daily reports from anglers landing Grilse mainly from the lower Sections of the river.  Among the names this week Martin Quigley (Derry) two Grilse on Fly from Lynches Dam, and Eddie McLaughlin fishing Fly catch and release, three Grilse from Lynches Dam.  Recommended Salmon Fly Foxford # 14
Sea Trout Fly   Waup & Yellow.

River Dennet
Water levels are now low and we should be getting good reports from the Anglers out with the Night Fly over the weekend.  I was out this week on the river with a few Anglers and they stated the air temperature was very low and catching Sea Trout was hard work but with the forecasted rise over the weekend they felt things would improve.  Two the Anglers I meet last week that had Sea trout Leonard Stewart (L’Derry) two on Worm and Kenny Hall (Donemana) two on Fly.  Recommended Sea Trout Fly’s   Waup & Yellow and Teal, Blue & Silver

River Deele
This river is one of the smaller of the tributaries of the River Foyle, entering the Foyle about 1 mile downstream from Lifford Bridge on the Donegal side. This river is well worth a visit, and it certainly was a worthwhile trip for Joe Kelly (Letterkenny) he landed a cracking 4lb Sea Trout from the Convoy section of the river.  Recommended Trout Flees Peter Ross and Teal, Blue & Silver

River Finn
The Finn had a rise in water levels yesterday but dropped off quickly and I received a few reports of Grilse from anglers fishing on the upper section, but catching a Salmon this weekend might be a bit more difficult for many anglers with the less favourable conditions but regardless I would recommend fishing the tail of the slower pools in the evenings and early mornings with small #14 Flies like Yellow & Gold Badger and Peter Ross Nymph

River Mourne and Tributaries
Reports this week remained good with fish from all the main sections of the Mourne and its Tributaries Derg, Owenkillew and Strule, one of the happy anglers this week was Adam Rodgers (Strabane) landing a cracking 10 lbs. Salmon on a Spinner from the Sionmills section of the Mourne.  Water levels have now dropped and if the rain stays away I would recommend the same Flees and methods as the Finn over the weekend

UPPER SHANNON

ShRFB reports for Lanesboro
The only reports are from transient boat traffic along the river. Fishing has been quiet. River levels are very high, remaining above the concrete below the bridge. Water levels should start to recover slowly by next week.
Kevin Lyons, MELVIEW LODGE GUESTHOUSE, Drumlish Road, Clonrollagh, Co Longford Tel : 003534345061 Mob: Email:  info@melviewlodge.com Web: http://www.melviewlodge.com  covering fisheries in the LONGFORD AREA and the STROKESTOWN LAKES
The weather and the high water levels are still having an affect on some local waters.  The Strokestown lakes are still high and in some parts flooded making fishing very difficult. Lakes in the North Longford area are still producing lots of Roach, Hybrids and small Bream to 2 lbs, with bag weights averaging between 20 lbs. and 50 lbs.

Dave Barnard and John Hurd angling guests of Melview lodge commented that despite the high levels of water they were still able to put together some good bags of fish, quality Roach and Hybrids along with some small Bream made up their catches each day. Kevin himself had a chance to have a days fishing with them and managed a mixed net to 50 lbs.
MID SHANNON AREA
The ShRFB reports for Ray Duthie Old Forge Banagher, Bait Stockist, Tackle and ACCOMMODATION PROVIDER  Tel: 057 9151504.  BANAGHER area this week.
Fishing is good along the mid Shannon around Banagher. Angling guests of Ray Duthie had good bags of hybrids, skimmers and some adult Bream on the Sheebeen stretch and Salmon Run. There are quality Roach from the town stretch at Banagher. River levels are high.
ShRFB reports for the RIVER SUCK VALLEY – Mid River Suck
River levels are very high in the Suck Valley area but expected to slowly recede with the present more settled spell of weather. Most venues are producing Roach and skimmer Bream. Best bait red and white maggots. With the dropping water more anglers are expected to fish heading into the holiday weekend.

SEA ANGLING

South Western Region:

Well known specimen hunter Michael Dennehy reports on some recent off shore deep sea angling on wrecks out from COURTMACSHERRY on a private boat.

Fished for two days over an offshore wreck using a 20 lbs. class rod and shimano torsa reel and 20 lbs. braid and fishing a storm shad deep produced some fine Cod including a fish of 37.5 lbs. on the first day and a best fish of 36.75 lbs. on the second day.  The bigger fish is the biggest Cod landed on Rod and line since the Irish record was captured in 1921 weighing 42 lbs. See a fine photo of this huge fish on our website www.cfb.ie  Michael wins our catch of the week award.

FISHING ON THE BEARA

Accommodation provider and angling guide Paul Harris reports on some recent shore fishing in the BEARA PENINSULA

Four visitors form the Norfolk/Suffolk area of the UK had good sport on their visit last week. Paul Claxton along with Ivy, Brian and Allan took the opportunity to experience a different type of fishing from their sandy shores back home and found some good fish off the Beara rocky outcrops. Pollack, huss and thornbacks to 7 pounds along with a few wrasse and dogfish gave them a taste for what they can expect here and have vowed to return for a longer visit next year.
Another angler who is returning but this time in October is Isle of Sheppey in Kent angler Ray Jefferey who in a days fishing managed a ballan wrasse of 5 lbs 2 ozs on crab and a blonde ray of 7 lbs 6 ozs taken on double sandeel along with a few doggies and huss.

REPORT TO AUGUST 1st ….
Weather settled after a broken week
This last week I was host to a group of fisherman from Holland and Belgium, from a fishing club called the delta fishers. This group is lead by a man called Koen who has been coming to fish here for the last 5 years and has had some great fishing. This year however we were badly hampered by the weather and only got out of the estuary for 3 out of the 6 days they were here. It must have been hard on them to wake up on the day they left to a complete change in the weather with light westerly winds and lots of sunshine! The fishing with them over the last week was mixed. We managed about a day and a half fishing on the reefs west of Loop Head. The fishing there was spotty with easterly winds holding the boat against the tide resulting in hardly any movement over the ground. Fish came in spurts, nice sized fish coming to the boat each time we moved position, but slowing till we moved again. We did my first try for Blue shark which only resulted in one run and no fish in the boat, but conditions were again not ideal.  Some fishing at anchor in the estuary did produce a steady flow of Ray and doggies and as the wind eased and I managed to get to anchor closer to the mouth of the estuary we had one great session which produced quite a few Bullhuss, Conger and a Tope. Koen has booked again for next year and hopefully the weather will be much better!
The last 2 days have been day charters and Long drifts aided by a light westerly wind have been most productive and easily the most pleasurably days I have had at sea in the last 5 or 6 weeks. Let’s hope this fine weather is here to stay for a while!!
