Llys-y-Fran Report – 27th March, 2009

The first three weeks of the 2009 season at Llys-y-Fran Reservoir have produced some interesting results. Anglers visiting the site for the opening weekend would have normally expected the sport to be much easier than it actually was.

With 2,500 fish stocked pre-season, those fishing ledgered worm or fly, usually find fish in numbers along the whole of the bank. Areas such as “Badgers, The Meadow and Top End” didn’t fish well. Those opting to fish fly from the boat with D.I.7’s and boobies also struggled and the reason for this it appears, was that the majority of fish had moved into the shallows and upper reaches. Those anglers fishing close in to the bank or using slower sinking lines from the boat produced some of the best results, and a good number of over wintered fish were taken.

Llys-y-FranSince the opening weekend the majority of anglers that have visited, realising the fish are higher in the water, have definitely taken advantage of this un-seasonal behaviour. Worm anglers are literally taking fish just a couple of rod lengths from the bank, whilst fly anglers from both and boat have been producing some excellent results using intermediate and D.I.3 lines and patterns which include Buzzers, Cormorants, Blobs and Boobies.

E Jones of Haverfordwest has produced some of the best 6 fish bags whilst fishing fly from the bank, last week he recorded a bag of 12lbs 6ozs with a best fish of 2lbs 6ozs, but his best has to be the 14lbs 10ozs recorded in the first week. This bag included a best fish of only 3lbs giving a good average weight for the other 5 fish.

Brian Dalton, a season permit holder from Haverfordwest took the best bag from the boat. His 6 fish limit included a best fish of 6lbs 4ozs and weighed 13lbs 6ozs in total. Well done Brian.

The heaviest fish landed so far during the 2009 season, is a very respectful 8lbs 5ozs Rainbow Trout. This was landed whilst fishing fly from the boat  by D King, or “Yorkie” as he is known of Rosbush.

Honours of the week however must go to D Jones of Pontardulias who on his last visit recorded the heaviest bag of the season so far, his six fish which included a Rainbow of 5lbs totalled 19lbs 8ozs.
